Madonna Unveils Star-Studded 'Confessions II' Film at Tribeca Festival Premiere

Madonna unveiled her 13-minute visual project, "Confessions II," centered around her upcoming album of the same name, at a sold-out Beacon Theatre on Friday, June 5. Speaking with Anderson Cooper, who filled in for Jimmy Fallon, Madonna explained her latest creation as occupying a unique space between a traditional music video and a full-length visual album, humorously citing her manager's calls for cost-saving. This special premiere was part of the Tribeca Festival, where she engaged in a candid, no-phones discussion with Cooper and the project's directors, David Toro and Solomon Chase (TORSO).
The "Confessions II" album, slated for release on July 3, marks a significant reunion for Madonna with Stuart Price, the producer behind her critically acclaimed 2005 album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor." The visual project itself delves into the first six tracks of the new album, offering attendees a privileged listen to four previously unreleased songs: "Good for the Soul," "One Step Away," "Danceteria," and "Read My Lips."
The film is a wild visual spectacle, demanding multiple viewings to fully absorb its intricate details. It features surreal scenes such as paparazzi SWAT teams, enigmatic forest people with green lasers, a dramatic car crash, breathtaking aerial flips over a dancefloor, and numerous steamy encounters in a public restroom, all while Benedict Cumberbatch famously dances outside the stalls. The evening at Beacon Theatre was bookended by screenings of this compelling visual experience.
Beyond Cumberbatch, "Confessions II" boasts an impressive roster of cameos. Sabrina Carpenter appears alongside Madonna, writhing and crawling on the dancefloor during their collaboration "Bring Your Love." Colombian singer Feid joins Madonna on "Read My Lips." Debi Mazar makes an appearance in "Danceteria," a nostalgic nod to her early days with Madonna at the iconic, now-defunct NYC club. Other contributors include Arca (additional production on "I Feel So Free"), Honey Dijon (who remixed "I Don't Search I Find"), genre-pushing British artist Shygirl, actress Julie Garner (reminiscent of Madonna circa 1987), and Madonna's daughter, Lourdes Leon, who delivers the film's memorable final line, "Cut, b-tch."
Madonna revealed that the visual project was filmed over approximately one month, contrasting with the year and a half of work she dedicated to the album with Stuart Price, a period during which she also awaited a long-gestating Netflix miniseries about her life. Currently, only two songs from the film – "I Feel So Free" and the Sabrina Carpenter collaboration "Bring Your Love" – have been officially released. It remains uncertain whether the four unreleased tracks featured in the film will be available on digital streaming platforms prior to the album's official July 3 release. However, the "Confessions II" visual project is set to debut on YouTube on Monday, June 8. Notably, the sublime track "Love Sensation," released on Thursday, June 4, following Madonna's surprise Times Square performance, is not included in this visual project.
Reflecting on her surprise pop-up performance for 50,000 fans in Times Square, Madonna described it as a beautiful full-circle moment, recalling her 1978 arrival in NYC with just $35 and pure ambition. She candidly admitted to experiencing nerves, particularly when contemplating swinging her leg over the Plexiglas barrier separating the stage from the bustling Times Square traffic several stories below, musing, "I don't know if I love my fans that much." After the Beacon Theatre event, Madonna planned to visit her 95-year-old father in the Hamptons for his birthday.
Looking ahead, "Confessions II" is scheduled to drop on July 3. Furthermore, on July 19, Madonna, alongside BTS and Shakira, will headline the inaugural World Cup halftime show at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, marking another significant milestone in her illustrious career.
