Madden NFL 26 Hits the Field with New Captains and Early Review Buzz!

Madden NFL 26 marks a continued, albeit modest, upward trajectory for the long-running video game series, which has been slowly improving since its lowest point with Madden NFL 21. While not quite returning to the series' former glory, the game maintains a positive trend, evidenced by its current Metacritic score of 72 for the PlayStation 5 version. This score, the highest a Madden NFL title has received since Madden NFL 20, represents a small but notable step up from Madden NFL 25's score of 70, suggesting that this year's enhancements are primarily incremental.
Significant changes have been implemented in Madden NFL 26's Franchise mode, largely garnering positive reception from critics. IGN, for instance, praised it as the best Franchise mode since Madden 17. The mode features an overhauled coach creator and a new skill points system that replaces the older skill tree, offering players weekly bonuses. However, not all aspects of the mode are improvements, as the minigame system continues to receive criticism, much like it did in Madden NFL 25.
This iteration of Madden also marks its debut on the Nintendo Switch family of consoles, launching on the Switch 2. Reviews for the Switch 2 version highlight some performance compromises, noting that the game does not visually compare favorably to other console versions. Additionally, players may experience annoyingly long load times, and the frame rate is locked to 40 frames per second. Despite these technical limitations, the Switch 2 version is described as a stable build, making it a viable option for those who wish to play Madden on the go.
In contrast to the more favorable reception of EA's recently released College Football series, Madden NFL 26's reviews might be a slight disappointment for the company. Nevertheless, the Madden NFL series is gradually regaining favor, though it appears that more substantial improvements than those seen in Madden NFL 26 will be necessary to truly rival the series' most acclaimed installments.
Beyond the core gameplay, Madden NFL 26 has also begun rolling out content for its popular Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) mode. Among the first major programs available is the Team Captains promo, which honors successful team leaders from the 2010s era. These players begin at a 78 Overall Rating (OVR) and can be upgraded to an 83 OVR, becoming valuable additions to any squad. A key feature of Team Captains is their universal Team Chemistry with all 32 NFL teams, offering significant roster flexibility. Furthermore, their maximum OVR cap will be progressively increased throughout the game's lifecycle, ensuring their long-term value.
The initial roster of Team Captains includes notable figures such as Alex Mack (C) from the Cleveland Browns, recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame; fellow NFL 2010s All-Decade Team member Geno Atkins (DT) from the Cincinnati Bengals; Super Bowl XLV champion A.J. Hawk (MIKE) from the Green Bay Packers; Michael Crabtree (WR) from the San Francisco 49ers; Greg Olsen (TE) from the Carolina Panthers; and Aqib Talib (CB) from the Denver Broncos.
Alongside the Team Captains, EA has also released the first wave of Team Builders items. This collection is spearheaded by two 87 OVR Champions: Brock Bowers (TE) and Nick Bosa (LEDG). The wave further includes eight Divisional Champions rated at 85 OVR and 32 Heroes with an 82 OVR. As is customary in MUT, players can collect lower-tier cards to complete specific sets, thereby unlocking these more powerful items.
