Lulu Unveils David Bowie Affair in Candid Confession

Lulu, the renowned singer behind hits like "Shout," has for the first time openly discussed intimate details of her affair with music legend David Bowie, describing their connection as "deeper than sex." Their romance unfolded in the 1970s after an initial encounter at a Sheffield hotel. Reflecting on their first passionate evening, Lulu admitted her memory was somewhat hazy due to having consumed a few drinks, finally confessing to having had sex with Bowie after years of choosing not to speak about it publicly. She emphasized that the experience of being in his orbit and working with him was incredible, feeling that he truly "honoured" her.
The Scottish songstress, known for "To Sir With Love" and her collaboration with Take That on "Relight My Fire," was involved with Bowie in the mid-70s while he was married to Angie. Lulu recalled Bowie's significant encouragement for her musical career, highlighting his invaluable guidance. She stated that their relationship transcended physical intimacy, explaining, "It's about a much deeper thing than that. And that was what we shared. I felt he saw me."
Lulu famously covered David Bowie's 1970 song "The Man Who Sold the World" in 1974, a track that Bowie himself produced, contributed backing vocals to, and played saxophone on. She also recorded his songs "Dodo" and "Can You Hear Me," though these were never officially released. Describing Bowie as a "chameleon," Lulu revealed an uncomfortable moment where he suggested she lose weight, which deeply affected her. She speculated that he desired to "redesign" her to fit his vision.
Ultimately, Lulu decided to end their relationship for her own wellbeing. She recounted how, during recording sessions in New York, she became uncomfortable with Bowie's heavy drug use. She chose to return to London, stating she couldn't simply "sit around." While Bowie initially perceived her departure as anger, Lulu clarified that she was more frustrated than angry, and her feelings for him and his talent remained strong, but she prioritized her comfort and health. Bowie passed away in 2016 at the age of 69.
In her personal life, Lulu was previously married to Bee Gees legend Maurice Gibb from 1969 to 1973, and later had a son, Jordan Frieda, with her second husband, celebrity hairstylist John Frieda. She has since acknowledged difficulties in finding a partner due to the lingering pain from past relationships. Recently, Lulu also disclosed her personal battle with alcoholism, which developed in her 60s as she navigated menopause, parental loss, and her children leaving home, describing the confession as "liberating."
