Lookman's Blazing Performance: Atletico Madrid Obliterates Barcelona, Shattering Records!
)
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has quickly established himself as a pivotal figure for Atlético Madrid following his high-profile winter move from Atalanta. His arrival in January has been lauded as a tactical masterstroke by coach Diego Simeone, with Lookman rapidly transforming the Spanish capital into his personal playground, particularly shining in the Copa del Rey.
In just three matches for the Rojiblancos, Lookman has delivered an astonishing four direct goal involvements, comprising two goals and two assists. Remarkably, all of this output has come in the high-pressure environment of the Copa del Rey, where he has been instrumental in helping Atletico Madrid dismantle reigning La Liga champions Barcelona with a dominant 4-0 victory and end their long-standing hoodoo against them.
The clash at the Metropolitano Stadium saw Simeone’s men seize control early. The hosts took the lead just six minutes into the contest when Barcelona defender Eric García inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. Atlético doubled their advantage in the 14th minute through Antoine Griezmann. Lookman then added his name to the scoresheet in the 33rd minute with clinical precision, finishing confidently to make it 3-0. He capped a superb first-half performance by turning provider moments before the break, teeing up Julián Álvarez for Atlético’s fourth goal and completing a dominant opening 45 minutes.
Speaking after the historic victory, Lookman expressed his delight and credited the collective effort: "I'm very, very happy. Of course, scoring is good, but I think the team played really well tonight. In the box we were very professional, and today we showed a great level of teamwork." When asked about his immediate impact, he added, "You always want to score as an attacker, always looking to get into dangerous positions, so I just try to be in the right place at the right time." While acknowledging the magnitude of the result, Lookman insisted the tie is far from over, stating, "It’s a big victory, but we have more games before the second leg. We need to keep the same mindset and focus on what’s ahead. We’re excited about the days to come.”
Lookman’s explosion in Spain is even more impressive when compared to his output earlier this season for former Europa League winners Atalanta. While he was a key figure for Atalanta, his efficiency has reached a new stratosphere under Simeone. His debut earlier this month against Real Betis already saw him set a unique club record, becoming the first Atletico player since the 2013/14 season to register a goal and assist on his debut. By adding another goal and assist against Barcelona, he has now become the first January signing in over a decade to contribute four goals in their first three competitive appearances for the club.
His excellent performance against Barcelona has reignited conversations among fans regarding national teammate Victor Osimhen's decision to play in the Turkish Super Lig. Many fans on social media platforms, like X, praised Lookman's choice to join a top European league, drawing stark comparisons with Osimhen, who they perceive as having limited exposure in Turkey. Comments highlighted the difference in hype and relevance between playing against top clubs like Barcelona in La Liga versus matches in the Turkish Super Lig, suggesting that career choices significantly impact a player's visibility and perceived greatness.
Interestingly, Lookman's move to Atletico Madrid came after a potential transfer to the Turkish Super Lig. Both Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray pursued the Super Eagles star in the January transfer window, with Fenerbahçe even reaching a verbal agreement with Lookman and Atalanta. However, as Fenerbahçe stalled while negotiating payment structures, Atlético Madrid swiftly entered the fray. The La Liga side had an initial bid rejected but immediately returned with an improved offer, matching Atalanta's terms and quickly agreeing on personal terms with Lookman. Faced with competitive offers, Lookman ultimately opted for the Spanish giants, a decision that has proven remarkably successful and impactful in his burgeoning career in Madrid.
