Long Island forecast: Rain expected into holiday weekend - Newsday
Long Island's weather has gone from summery back to springlike, and forecasters said the cooler temperatures and rain are in store all week and into the holiday weekend.
The National Weather Service said Memorial Day weekend, with the opening of summer beach season, could be hampered by cool temperatures and rain.
Forecasters predicted rain is possible Wednesday through Saturday, with rain most likely Wednesday and Thursday. Skies are expected to clear on Sunday.
Tuesday's sunny skies and temperatures pushing 70 will deteriorate Tuesday night — when lows in the 50s are expected. Rain and a high of 60 degrees are expected Wednesday, with more rain and a high in the mid-to-upper 50s Thursday.
Strong, gusting winds also are likely across Long Island both days, with the weather service noting gale-force winds are possible for Atlantic Ocean waters between New Jersey and Montauk late Wednesday into Thursday.
Temperatures will drop into the mid-to-upper 40s overnight Thursday and Friday, the weather service said. While daytime temperatures should return to the 60s Friday and Saturday, the weather service is calling for damp weather both days.
Rain could hamper early holiday weekend travel plans, as well, but forecasters were calling for sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s on Sunday and Monday.
