Auctioneers Quizzed Over Car Sale Scandal

Two auctioneers, Brown Tsuma Mukanda and Kennedy Kweyu Shikuku from Eshikhoni Auctioneers, have been questioned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) regarding a contentious sale of public assets belonging to Matili Technical Training Institute. The auctioneers are under scrutiny for their involvement in the alleged fraudulent auction of a vehicle from the institute’s driving school fleet. The vehicle, valued at Sh5.4 million, was sold for only Sh1.2 million.

Samson Itonde, owner of Dominion Auctioneers, also appeared for questioning. Itonde is contracted by Ramagon Construction Company Ltd to seize and auction the institute's assets over a disputed payment claim. EACC investigations suggest the debt claim used to justify these auctions is fake and lacks legal or financial support.

The questioning of the auctioneers is part of a larger investigation into corruption, fraudulent disposal of public property, and economic crimes related to Matili Technical Training Institute's assets. The EACC suspects the auctioneers benefited from illicit proceeds through their role in the improper disposal of public property. This follows the arrest of three directors of Ramagon Construction Company Limited the previous week, who are accused of conspiring with public officials to manipulate tender values and illegally extract public funds from the institute.

The EACC has confirmed ongoing investigations and the possibility of further legal action against individuals and firms involved in the fraudulent scheme.
