London Mayor Sadiq Khan's Landmark Lagos Visit Fuels UK-Nigeria Tech & Trade Boom

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, recently concluded a significant visit to Lagos, Nigeria, as part of the United Kingdom's ongoing efforts to foster inclusive and mutually beneficial growth opportunities within its trade relationships, particularly with Nigeria. This trip underscored Nigeria's increasing importance as a crucial partner in the UK’s global trade and investment strategy, with a strong focus on emerging sectors such as fintech, innovation, and the creative economy. The visit successfully aimed to bolster the UK-Nigeria economic relationship while celebrating the profound cultural ties and the shared dynamism of London and Lagos.
A key component of Mayor Khan's mission was leading a substantial trade delegation of 27 London-based companies specializing in fintech, enterprise technology, and sustainability. This initiative was strategically supported by London & Partners, the Mayor's dedicated growth agency, which is committed to fostering resilient, sustainable, and inclusive economic growth both within London and internationally. The delegation included notable firms such as Algomarketing, Chekkit, Deepsearch Labs, and TIPA Solar within enterprise and sustainability, alongside fintech innovators like Abound, Allica Bank, CLOWD9, and Ozone API. Under the guidance of Howard Dawber OBE, Deputy Mayor for Business and Growth and Chair of London & Partners, the agency orchestrated a series of high-level engagements, facilitating connections between the London delegation and Nigerian policymakers, investors, and creatives to unlock new business opportunities across Africa.
This landmark visit marked the first official trip by a sitting Mayor of London to sub-Saharan Africa, thereby emphasizing London's unwavering commitment to cultivating long-term, cross-sector partnerships. These partnerships are designed to support inclusive growth, digital transformation, and profound cultural exchange. Mayor Khan notably highlighted the symbiotic relationship between London, recognized as Europe’s tech capital, and Nigeria, often hailed as Africa’s tech capital, underscoring the potential for joint collaboration to shape the future of global innovation.
During his engagements in Lagos, Mayor Khan participated in a pivotal panel discussion titled “Bridging Borders: How London and Lagos Can Shape the Future of Global Tech.” In this forum, he advocated for Nigerian tech businesses to consider investing in London, promoting a collaborative ecosystem for innovation. Additionally, the Mayor co-hosted the Lagos Canvas Reception with Mo Abudu at Ebony Life place, an event dedicated to celebrating Nigeria’s vibrant creative sector. This reception served to acknowledge Lagos and London as powerful cultural and creative industry hubs, fostering stronger ties between their respective creative ecosystems across arts, fashion, music, and film – sectors central to the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP).
Reflecting on the visit, Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed his delight, stating, “I am delighted to be visiting Nigeria and Africa this week – the first visit of its kind by a Mayor of London – to bang the drum for the capital and further develop the strong ties between our countries.” He further emphasized Africa’s burgeoning economic growth and population, foreseeing “huge opportunities to deepen partnerships with London” over the next decade. Khan affirmed his dedication to driving trade and investment across crucial sectors including finance, education, health, tech, creative industries, and sustainability, while also celebrating the significant contributions of Londoners of African heritage to making London a global city.
Complementing the Mayor's sentiments, Mr. Jonny Baxter, British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, reiterated that the visit underscores the UK Government’s commitment to strengthening economic and cultural ties with Nigeria. He highlighted that collaboration across various sectors, from trade to fintech and fashion, is actively driving innovation and growth. Similarly, UK Minister for Africa, Lord Collins of Highbury, lauded the visit as an “exciting moment for the UK’s relationship with countries across Africa,” underscoring its strong demonstration of commitment to deepening ties. Both officials emphasized that strengthening trade, investment, and cultural links is not merely vital for shared economic growth but also for fostering long-term partnerships rooted in mutual respect and opportunities for all.
Following his successful engagements in Lagos, Mayor Khan is set to continue his historic trade mission with subsequent stops in Accra, Johannesburg, and Cape Town. These future visits aim to further champion London as an attractive destination for investment, innovation, and cultural exchange, thereby solidifying and strengthening the UK’s ties with nations across the African continent for sustained economic prosperity and partnership.
