Lollapalooza 2026 Faces Chaos: Floods, Cancellations, and Unforgettable Surprise Sets!

Lollapalooza 2026, held at Chicago’s Grant Park, has been a dynamic event marked by both electrifying musical performances and significant weather-related disruptions. The festival, spanning from Thursday, July 30, to Sunday, August 2, witnessed a blend of generational summits and unexpected schedule changes.

The festival kicked off with a momentous headline set by hometown heroes Smashing Pumpkins on Thursday, July 30. Marking their first Lollapalooza headlining slot in 32 years, Billy Corgan turned the performance into a generational summit by bringing out surprise guests Olivia Rodrigo and Yungblud. Yungblud joined Corgan on stage to perform “Luna,” the closing track from the band’s 1993 breakthrough album, Siamese Dream. Later, Olivia Rodrigo, introduced by Corgan as “a very, very special guest,” captivated the crowd with her rendition of “Thirty-Three,” from the band’s iconic 1995 double album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. These pairings highlighted the influence of nineties alt-rock on contemporary artists, with both guests representing chart eras the Pumpkins helped make possible. Leading up to the festival, Corgan celebrated with “Pumpkinpalooza,” a series of hometown events including a sold-out show, a merch pop-up, and a roving Madame Zuzu’s teahouse. The band’s legacy was underscored by the commercial success of albums like Mellon Collie, which debuted at No. 1 and was certified diamond, and Siamese Dream, certified four-times platinum. Their Lollapalooza appearance also featured nineties nostalgia with guests like Barry Williams and former touring bassist Melissa Auf der Maur at aftershows, ahead of their ambitious “The Rats in the Cage” tour celebrating 30 years of Mellon Collie.

On Friday, July 31, Lil Uzi Vert's highly anticipated Lollapalooza set at Grant Park was abruptly cancelled due to severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and stormy conditions that swept through the area. However, Uzi turned the scrapped performance into a celebration of their 31st birthday by surprising fans with a new eight-track EP titled Maverick “Almost Forever.” This project marks the Philadelphia rapper’s first release in two years and arrived with poignant cover art depicting a young Uzi alongside their grandmother. The release date also held historical significance for Uzi, as it was exactly a decade after the release of The Perfect LUV Tape on July 31, 2016, which debuted at No. 55 on the Billboard 200 and later achieved gold certification by the RIAA. Lil Uzi Vert has established themselves as one of the most commercially dominant hip-hop artists of their generation, having topped the Billboard 200 three times with Eternal Atake (2020), Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World 2 (2020), and Pink Tape (2023), and earning a Hot 100 No. 1 as a featured artist on Migos’ “Bad and Boujee” in 2017. Their single “XO Tour Llif3” also peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 and is certified diamond.

Day three of Lollapalooza 2026, Saturday, August 1, was severely impacted by heavy overnight rain and subsequent flooding across Chicago’s Grant Park. Organizers were forced to delay the festival's opening until 3 p.m. CT, three hours later than scheduled, to allow for cleanup efforts in flooded areas, particularly Hutchinson Field, home to major stages. As a direct consequence, most performances slated for the morning and early afternoon were cancelled. Exceptions included K-pop group CORTIS, whose set was rescheduled and shortened to 40 minutes from its original 50, and English rock band Wolf Alice, whose hour-long performance was reduced to approximately 30 minutes. Despite the challenges, Saturday’s lineup featured headliners Olivia Dean and JENNIE, alongside performances by The Neighbourhood, Geese, Sienna Spiro, Clipse, and Ethel Cain.

Lollapalooza 2026 is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, August 2, with headlining performances from Tate McRae and The xx, complemented by sets from Adéla, Jade, aespa, and Stella Lefty, bringing an eventful festival to its close despite the varied challenges.
