Logan Marshall-Green Hints at Major 'Marshals' Drama

The CBS series 'Marshals', already greenlit for a second season, offers a unique blend of cowboy life and modern law enforcement, described by actor Logan Marshall-Green as 'SEAL Team on horseback'. The show follows Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) after his departure from the Yellowstone Ranch, as he is recruited by his former Navy SEAL teammate Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) to join a U.S. Marshals team. Operating in Montana, they find themselves embroiled in conflicts between ranchers, locals, and the Broken Rock reservation, navigating complex indigenous storylines that are central to the series' appeal.
A significant aspect of 'Marshals' is the evolving brotherhood between Kayce and Cal, which becomes increasingly complicated as they confront past SEAL traumas. Both men bear the psychological toll of violence, but Cal, in particular, harbors deep-seated demons and hidden motives that threaten to drive a wedge between them. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut is credited with developing Cal's character into a three-dimensional figure, with the series transitioning from a linear procedural into a more character-driven drama as the season progresses, particularly from mid-season onwards.
Logan Marshall-Green's involvement was influenced by his reunion with 'Quarry' director Greg Yaitanes, who helmed the first two episodes and established the show's visual style. Their existing creative language facilitated Marshall-Green's quick commitment to the project. The actor appreciated the show's commitment to indigenous narratives, highlighting the contributions of cast members like Mo Brings Plenty, Gil Birmingham, Brecken Merrill, and Tatanka Means, who portray characters often fighting for the rights of indigenous peoples.
The team Cal assembles is depicted using a 'Voltron' analogy, with each member having a distinct role: Cal as the head, Kayce as the sword, Tatanka as the heart, Ash as the brains, and Belle as the disguise/info. However, this dynamic is not without its challenges; past events, specifically a haunting incident in Afghanistan, begin to resurface through flashbacks, threatening to fracture the team's cohesion. Cal's arrival in Montana and his leadership role are also tied to a different, undisclosed reason separate from the SEALs and Marshals, which is promised to be revealed.
Marshall-Green shared insights into forming an authentic brotherhood with co-star Luke Grimes, praising Grimes' grounded nature and his decision to allow their on-screen relationship to grow organically. Regarding the portrayal of violence, Marshall-Green acknowledged its weight on the characters, particularly distinguishing the reactions of the two SEALs from other team members. He also noted Cal's personal quest for love, expressed through his interactions with bartender Maddie, and the series' incorporation of live country music performances, a touch Yaitanes carried over from 'Quarry'.
The intricate action sequences, including large-scale shootouts, are meticulously choreographed through extensive rehearsals involving Hot Wheels cars, Army figures, and the constant guidance of military consultant Ryan Sangster (an ex-SEAL) and stunt coordinator Matt. The production emphasizes authenticity, with movements and silhouettes constantly scrutinized by legitimate SEALs to ensure accuracy. This dedication extends to rehearsing with gear, allowing actors to embody their characters fully within intense combat scenarios. 'Marshals' is broadcast on CBS and available for streaming on Paramount+.
