Local AI Innovator Road Preppers Seals Landmark Partnership with Google for Chatbot Lara.ng

Google has officially announced a strategic partnership with Road Preppers, a Nigerian company renowned for developing the Artificial Intelligence-based public transit solution, Lara.ng. This significant announcement was made during the recent Google for Nigeria event held in Lagos. The primary objective of this collaboration is to enhance the urban transportation experience for the inhabitants of Lagos by integrating public transit routes within the city directly into Google Maps.
Road Preppers, headquartered in Lagos, leverages a multidisciplinary approach combining Artificial Intelligence with expertise in design thinking, transportation, maps, and data analytics. Their mission is to address the intricate challenges people face when navigating from one location to another within complex urban environments. The company's flagship product, Lara.ng, has gained considerable traction among Lagosians. Lara, an AI-powered chatbot, provides users with essential directions for public transit at any time of day. Going a step further, Lara also furnishes estimated fares for various modes of public transport, including kekes, buses, taxis, and the LagBus service.
The partnership with Google is set to bring substantial benefits to Road Preppers. According to Samuel Odeloye, Co-Founder and Team Lead at Road Preppers, this collaboration will be instrumental in improving Lara's underlying technology, allowing for a deeper understanding of the vast data their platform processes. Furthermore, it will facilitate significant advancements in their Artificial Intelligence systems. Odeloye highlighted the previous limitation of quarterly updates and expressed that with Google's resources, they will now be able to update commuter needs on a more frequent basis, potentially weekly or monthly, ensuring the information remains current and highly relevant. Financially, the tech giant's involvement will also aid Road Preppers in restructuring their business model, placing them in a more robust state.
Beyond Lagos, Road Preppers has ambitious plans for the expansion of Lara.ng's AI solution. The company has identified other major Nigerian states such as Oyo, Abuja, Kano, Port-Harcourt, and Kaduna as key expansion targets, aiming to replicate the success and utility of Lara across more regions.
For Google, this partnership represents a strategic move to broaden its operational footprint and deepen its relevance within Nigeria. By leveraging the extensive data already generated by Road Preppers, Google aims to refine its services and make them more pertinent to the specific needs and context of the Nigerian populace, further solidifying its presence in the West African market.
