Lionesses Roar: England Brings Euro 2025 Trophy Home After Thrilling Final!
)
The England Lionesses have once again etched their names in history, successfully defending their UEFA Women's EURO title by defeating Spain in a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout in the Euro 2025 final. The thrilling match, held at St. Jakob-Park, concluded with a 1-1 draw after extra time, demonstrating England's unwavering resilience as they secured their second consecutive European crown.
The final began with an early challenge for England as Spain seized the lead in the 25th minute. Mariona Caldentey precisely headed home a perfectly delivered cross from Ona Batlle, putting Spain ahead 1-0. However, the Lionesses mounted a determined comeback in the second half. Alessia Russo leveled the score in the 57th minute, capitalizing on a clever pass from Chloe Kelly to restore parity at 1-1. Despite numerous opportunities, including a header from Lucy Bronze that struck the crossbar, the game remained tied after 90 minutes and extra time, leading to a tense penalty shootout.
The shootout became a test of nerves, with England converting three of their five penalties while Spain managed only one out of four. England's goalkeeper, Hannah Hampton, emerged as the undeniable hero, making crucial saves from Olga Carmona and Irene Paredes. On the attacking front, Alessia Russo and Chloe Kelly successfully converted their spot-kicks for England, sealing their victory. Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati was named the Player of the Tournament for her exceptional performance throughout the competition. This triumph is particularly significant as it marks England as the first English senior team to win a major international tournament on foreign soil since the men's 1966 World Cup victory.
Following their historic win, England women’s head coach Sarina Wiegman, who has now guided the Lionesses to back-to-back UEFA Women’s Euro titles, was spotted sharing a jubilant moment with Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy. The usually composed Dutch coach was seen beaming with joy and dancing as Burna Boy joined her and the team during their Euro 2025 trophy celebration at the Queen Victoria Memorial in London. Fans captured Wiegman throwing her hands in the air and mouthing Burna Boy’s lyrics, visibly overwhelmed to be near her favorite artist. Burna Boy’s surprise live performance electrified the atmosphere, with the Grammy-winning artist performing chart-topping hits like “Last Last” and “City Boys” to the delight of the fans and players. Wiegman notably let loose on stage, dancing and cheering as Burna Boy hyped the crowd, shouting, “This one na for the queens!”
This victory further solidifies Sarina Wiegman's impressive coaching record. She has now become the first coach to win three UEFA Women’s Euro titles and holds the distinction of being the only manager to achieve this feat with two different nations: the Netherlands and England, cementing her legacy in women's football.
