Lionesses Reign Supreme: England Clinches Euro 2025 Title!
)
The England Lionesses have once again made history, successfully defending their UEFA Women's EURO title by defeating Spain in a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout at Euro 2025. The final match, held at St. Jakob-Park, concluded with a 1-1 draw after extra time, showcasing England's remarkable resilience as they secured their second consecutive European crown.
The final began with an early setback for England. In the 25th minute, Spain took the lead when Mariona Caldentey met a perfectly delivered cross from Ona Batlle, heading the ball past England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton to put Spain 1-0 up. The Lionesses fought back fiercely in the second half, with Alessia Russo finding the equalizer in the 57th minute. Russo capitalized on a clever pass from Chloe Kelly, finishing expertly to restore parity at 1-1. Despite several subsequent opportunities, including a header from Lucy Bronze that struck the crossbar, the game remained tied after 90 minutes and extra time, pushing the contest into a tense penalty shootout.
The shootout proved to be a nail-biting affair. England successfully converted three out of five penalties, while Spain managed to convert only one out of four. Hannah Hampton emerged as the undeniable hero, making crucial saves from Olga Carmona and Irene Paredes. For England, Alessia Russo and Chloe Kelly confidently converted their spot-kicks, sealing the victory and the championship title.
This triumph is particularly significant as it marks England as the first English senior team to win a major tournament on foreign soil since the men's 1966 World Cup victory. Following her exceptional performance throughout the tournament, Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati was named Player of the Tournament.
The historic win was followed by a jubilant homecoming celebration at the Queen Victoria Memorial in London, where the team's head coach, Sarina Wiegman, shared a memorable moment with Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy. The usually composed Dutch coach was visibly overwhelmed with joy, dancing and beaming as Burna Boy joined her and the team during the trophy celebration.
Burna Boy's surprise live performance electrified the atmosphere, with the Grammy-winning artist performing chart-topping hits like “Last Last” and “City Boys” to an ecstatic crowd of fans and players. Wiegman notably let loose on stage, mouthing lyrics and cheering enthusiastically as Burna Boy hyped the crowd, declaring, “This one na for the queens!”
This latest success further cements Sarina Wiegman's remarkable legacy in women's football. She has now guided the Lionesses to back-to-back UEFA Women’s Euro titles, becoming the first coach to win three UEFA Women’s Euro titles overall, and notably, the only manager to achieve this feat with two different nations, having previously led the Netherlands to victory.
