Libya's Berniq Airways Expands Fleet with Airbus A321 Aircraft to Meet Rising Travel Demand
Libyan carrier Berniq Airways has added two Airbus A321 aircraft through a wet-lease agreement as it expands operations and prepares for the delivery of new Airbus A320neo jets.
Libyan airline Berniq Airways has expanded its fleet by wet-leasing two Airbus A321-200 aircraft from Romanian carrier FLYONE Romania to meet rising passenger demand during the busy summer travel season.
The agreement provides Berniq Airways with the aircraft, flight crews, maintenance and insurance, allowing the airline to increase capacity quickly without making a permanent fleet addition.
The additional aircraft will strengthen the airline's operations from Benina International Airport in Benghazi, where demand typically increases during the holiday period as business travellers, tourists and members of the Libyan diaspora travel across North Africa and the Middle East.
The latest expansion complements an Airbus A320 already operating under a wet-lease agreement from Jordan Aviation. Together, the aircraft will help Berniq Airways operate more flights during one of the year's busiest travel periods.
The fleet expansion comes as Berniq prepares for a major long-term investment in newer aircraft. During the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow, the airline placed an order for six Airbus A320neo Family aircraft, becoming the first Libyan carrier to order the fuel-efficient jets.
Deliveries of the new aircraft are expected to begin from 2027. According to Airbus, the A320neo family offers up to 20% lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions compared with previous-generation aircraft.
Founded in 2018, Berniq Airways has steadily expanded its domestic and international network despite Libya's challenging operating environment. The airline now serves destinations across North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
The move also highlights a growing trend within African aviation. More airlines are turning to wet leasing as a flexible way to respond to seasonal demand, launch new routes or bridge capacity gaps while waiting for new aircraft deliveries.
For Africa's aviation sector, Berniq's expansion reflects continued investment despite economic and political uncertainty. Airlines across the continent are increasingly modernising their fleets to improve efficiency, reduce operating costs and enhance the passenger experience.
The development could also create new opportunities for travellers across Africa. As North African carriers expand their networks and fleets, passengers may benefit from improved regional connectivity and additional travel options linking Africa with Europe and the Middle East.
