Liberia's U.S. Friendly Match Axed Due to Visa Denials

In a significant setback for Liberian sports and diplomatic efforts, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) has formally announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated international friendly match between Liberia's national football team, the Lone Star, and Minnesota United. The game, organized by Strengthening African Resilience Towards Excellence (SARX), was slated for July 26, 2026, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This cancellation stems primarily from the United States Embassy in Monrovia denying visas to a substantial number of locally based players and crucial members of the Liberian delegation.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports, led by Minister Cornelia Wonkerleh Kruah, issued a formal communication confirming the cancellation and invoking the Force Majeure clause (Article XII) of its Match Appearance Agreement with SARX. This legal provision effectively shields the Liberian government from any liability or potential breach-of-contract damages. The Ministry clarified that extensive collaborative efforts were undertaken with the Liberia Football Association (LFA) to secure the necessary travel documents, but these efforts were ultimately thwarted by the U.S. Embassy's rejection of numerous visa applications.
