Leonardo DiCaprio's 'One Battle After Another' Conquers Box Office with $22 Million Opening!

Director Paul Thomas Anderson has achieved the biggest box office opening of his career with his latest film, "One Battle After Another," an R-rated comedic action thriller. The movie, which debuted on September 26, 2025, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro, garnered a stellar $22.4 million domestically from 3,634 North American theaters over its opening weekend. Adding an impressive $26.1 million from international territories, the film achieved a cumulative global debut of $48.5 million.
Despite this being a career-high opening for Anderson, the financial outlook for "One Battle After Another" is complex. With a reported production budget exceeding $130 million and an additional $70 million spent on marketing, box office experts note that a low-$20 million debut presents a challenge. The film requires roughly $300 million globally to break even theatrically, given the typical 50-50 split of ticket sales between studios and theater operators. However, Warner Bros. has been on a strong run this year, defying expectations with a string of hits, and the originality and nearly three-hour runtime of "One Battle After Another" suggest that building excitement and audience turnout may take time.
Critical and audience reception has been overwhelmingly positive, which bodes well for its sustained theatrical run. The film boasts a near-perfect 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising it as "An epic screwball adventure teeming with awe-inspiring action set pieces, One Battle After Another is Paul Thomas Anderson's most entertaining film yet while also one of his most thematically rich." Audiences have also responded rapturously, awarding it an "A" grade on CinemaScore exit polls. The strong performance of premium large formats like Imax, Dolby, and VistaVision, contributing 51% of the overall domestic tally, is also expected to bolster its earnings.
Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Bob Ferguson, an ex-revolutionary turned stoner dad who is living off the grid with his daughter, Willa (newcomer Chase Infiniti). The plot unfolds as an enemy, played by Sean Penn, resurfaces, threatening to disrupt their family life. Benicio del Toro portrays Sensei Sergio, who runs a karate dojo where Willa trains. Initial ticket buyers were predominantly male (65%) and over the age of 25 (42%).
"One Battle After Another" is loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel “Vineland.” Director Paul Thomas Anderson, renowned for films like "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia," and "The Master," is considered one of his generation's greatest filmmakers, though his movies aren't typically commercial draws. For context, his highest-grossing film prior to this was "There Will Be Blood," which earned $76.4 million globally. Domestically, "One Battle After Another" has already outgrossed the lifetime hauls of several of Anderson's previous works, including "Phantom Thread," "Magnolia," "The Master," "Inherent Vice," "Licorice Pizza," and "Punch-Drunk Love." It also compares favorably to DiCaprio's previous collaboration with Martin Scorsese, "Killers of the Flower Moon," which opened to $23 million and ended its run with $68 million domestically and $158 million globally.
The film's unique costume design, overseen by Colleen Atwood, adds another layer of character detail. DiCaprio's character, Bob Ferguson, spends a significant portion of the movie in an "old, cheap dad robe," a cotton-wool blend made from vintage-looking, aged fabric, a choice inspired by Jeff Bridges' character, The Dude, from "The Big Lebowski." He also wears Altra Lone Peak trail runners, chosen for their wide toe box. Willa's blue petticoat dress for a dance sequence was inspired by something Anderson observed, with the color changed from pink to blue to reflect her emotional state and the film's environment. For Sensei Sergio, Benicio del Toro sports a custom chainstitch-embroidered jean jacket by Jimmy McBride and cowboy boots found in New Mexico, reflecting a "Rebel Without a Cause"-kind of boot mixed with a Western cowboy style.
In its opening weekend, "One Battle After Another" faced competition from other new releases. Universal’s kid-friendly "Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie" debuted in second place with $13.5 million and an "A+" CinemaScore. Lionsgate’s R-rated slasher "The Strangers: Chapter 2" landed at No. 5 with a tepid $5.9 million, hindered by a "C-" CinemaScore and a brutal 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, existing hits continued to perform strongly, with Sony’s anime smash "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle" generating $118.1 million domestically and $605.4 million globally, and "The Conjuring: Last Rites" reaching $161.5 million domestically and $435 million globally. Conversely, last weekend’s releases, Universal’s "Him" and Sony’s "A Big Bold Beautiful Journey," experienced sharp declines in their second outings.
