Legendary Reborn: The Ferrari Testarossa Returns to Dominate the Supercar Scene

The 2027 Ferrari 849 Testarossa emerges as a significant evolution, described more as an SF90 Evo in terms of core hardware, yet representing the pinnacle of Ferrari's standard production performance. This new model proudly revives the legendary Testarossa name, aiming to inspire the same wonder as its iconic predecessors. At its heart lies a sophisticated plug-in hybrid powertrain, combining a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with a trifecta of electric motors, delivering all-wheel drive and advanced torque-vectoring capabilities.
Under the bonnet, the V8 engine has undergone substantial enhancements, now producing 819 horsepower at 7,500 rpm, a notable increase over the SF90's 769 hp, with torque rated at 621 lb-ft at 6,500 rpm. The electric component, supplied by a 7.45kWh lithium-ion battery, contributes 217bhp, culminating in a formidable total system output of 1,035 horsepower, surpassing the SF90's 986 hp. Key engine upgrades include bigger turbos with low-friction bearings derived from the F80, chunkier intercoolers, new cylinder heads, a different block, revised intake plenums, valvetrain, and fuel rail. To counteract any potential weight gain from these additions, Ferrari has incorporated titanium fastenings and components borrowed from the 296 GT3, ensuring the 849 Testarossa maintains the same weight as the SF90 at approximately 3,850 lbs. Power is routed through an eight-speed F1-style paddleshifted gearbox, which Ferrari claims is faster, more efficient, and delivers a more emotional and sonorous experience, particularly on the overrun.
Performance figures are staggering: 0 to 62 mph (0-100 kph) is achieved in a claimed 2.25 seconds, with 0 to 124 mph in just 6.3 seconds. Early tests at Fiorano have clocked a lap time of 1 minute 17.5 seconds, making it about 1.5 seconds quicker than the SF90 and a mere fifth of a second off the SF90 XX. The reported top speed is 205 mph. Aerodynamically, the Testarossa demands 15 percent more cooling than the SF90 and generates 25 kg more downforce, totaling 415 kg at 155 mph. Its exterior design is a blend of contemporary Ferrari aesthetics and subtle nods to its heritage, featuring a double-tiered front with aero flicks and a black horizontal mask housing the headlights. The side profile boasts deep channels carved into the door tops, crucial for feeding the larger intercoolers. The most striking element is arguably the 'twin-tail' rear, characterized by pontoon-like arches flowing into a pair of static winglets, supplemented by an active central section that deploys for increased downforce. Twin Inconel exhausts, Venturis, and various skirted and vented components complete the aggressive rear design, inspired in part by the 1970 Ferrari 512 S race car.
Despite its formidable power, Ferrari emphasizes the 849 Testarossa's daily drivability and comfort. It offers an electric-only range of 25 km and features a suite of advanced electronic aids. These include Side Slip Control version 9.0, advanced traction control, an eDiff, SCM, FDE 2.0 EPS, and ABS Evo. A standout innovation is FIVE (Ferrari Integrated Vehicle Estimator), a system that models the car's dynamic behavior in real-time, essentially creating a digital twin to predict driver intentions and adjust systems like torque vectoring and braking distribution for a more predictable and natural feel at the limit. Notably, above 130 mph, the car transitions to rear-wheel drive only. The interior is refreshed, comfortable, and pared back, featuring a proper start button and switches on the steering wheel, with the driver display being the sole screen. All models also benefit from a nose-lift system, a practical feature even for the track-focused Assetto Fiorano variant.
The 849 Testarossa is available in both Coupe and Spider body styles. The Coupe is priced around €460,000, with sales commencing in April 2026. The Spider, featuring a folding metal hardtop, carries a 90 kg weight penalty and is priced around €500,000, expected to be available in July 2026. For those seeking maximum performance, the Assetto Fiorano package is offered for both variants at an additional €52,500. This package includes more aggressive nose flicks and double-height twin-tail elements, single-phase Multimatic suspension, a 30 kg weight reduction through extensive carbon fiber components (including wheels and lightweight tubular seats), and specific Michelin Cup2 tires. Tire options also include Bridgestone Potenza Sports (with run-flat availability) and Pirelli P Zero Rs, with Cup 2 R tires available on request for the Assetto Fiorano.
Within Ferrari's current lineup, the 849 Testarossa now occupies the position as the most hardcore road car, surpassing the SF90. It is a performance model that does not require a pre-existing relationship with the brand, distinguishing it from pinnacle models like the Daytona SP3 or F80. The name 'Testarossa' itself has a rich history; 'Testa Rosa' (red head) originated from the red valve covers of the 1950s 500 TR race car. The '849' in the new model's designation refers to its eight cylinders and 49cc displacement per cylinder, totaling 4.0 liters. While the new design unapologetically looks to the future with minimal visual callbacks to the 1980s Testarossa, it draws inspiration from models like the 1957 250 Testa Rossa, a three-time Le Mans winner. The 849 Testarossa faces a competitive landscape with rivals such as the Lamborghini Revuelto and the Aston Martin Valhalla, but with its blend of enhanced power, advanced technology, and confident design, Ferrari is poised for another strong contender in the supercar segment.
