Legendary Choreographer Yuen Woo-ping to Receive Prestigious Far East Film Festival Lifetime Award!

The 28th Far East Film Festival, scheduled to take place in Udine, Italy, from April 24 to May 2 at the Teatro Nuovo and Visionario, is set to bestow its prestigious Golden Mulberry Award for lifetime achievement upon the celebrated Hong Kong action choreographer and director Yuen Woo-ping. Yuen, who recently marked his 81st birthday, stands as an iconic figure in the realm of martial arts cinema, having profoundly influenced the genre through his directorial vision and masterful choreography.
Concluding the festival will be the screening of Yuen Woo-ping's most recent directorial endeavor, the wuxia feature “Blades of the Guardians.” This film is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed Chinese manhua series “Biao Ren,” immersing audiences in the tumultuous political landscape and unforgiving desert terrains of China’s late Sui Dynasty. The narrative centers on a mercenary warrior tasked with escorting a wanted man through seemingly insurmountable dangers. “Blades of the Guardians” skillfully weaves together elements characteristic of the Western and period epic genres with the intricate martial arts traditions that have been a signature of Yuen’s illustrious career. Festival organizers highlighted a particularly striking sandstorm sequence, praised for its staging reminiscent of the “Mad Max” films. The movie initially premiered during the Lunar New Year, and Yuen has already indicated plans for a sequel.
Yuen Woo-ping's distinguished career began in Hong Kong, where he directed pivotal films that launched stars to global recognition. His directorial highlights include “Drunken Master,” a seminal work that played a crucial role in establishing Jackie Chan’s international stardom, alongside other notable films such as “Iron Monkey” and “True Legend.” His influence extended internationally as he choreographed action sequences for some of the most iconic global productions of the past 25 years. His distinctive fight choreography left an indelible mark on the Wachowski sisters’ “Matrix” trilogy, Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” Quentin Tarantino’s two “Kill Bill” films, and Wong Kar Wai’s “The Grandmaster.” He is also widely recognized for his contributions to the popular “Ip Man” franchise.
In addition to honoring Yuen Woo-ping, the Far East Film Festival will also present a lifetime achievement award to the distinguished Japanese actor Yakusho Koji. Furthermore, Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing will be recognized with an outstanding achievement award, underscoring the festival's commitment to celebrating Asian cinematic talent from across the region.
