Lawyer withdraws from May Edochie's divorce case over 'persistent bullying' - TheCable Lifestyle
May had for divorce from Yul Edochie and demanded N100 million in damages in 2023.
This was after the actor Judy Austin as his second wife in April 2022.
In a recent Facebook statement, the law firm said its services to May have “come to an end” due to the “hostility” of some individuals affiliated to the group ‘May Nation’.
DPA stressed that the safety and well-being of its staff had become a major concern.
According to the statement, DPA staff had suffered “persistent bullying and trolling” not only from supporters of Yul and Judy but also from May’s followers.
“The hostile environment fostered by certain individuals within the “May Nation” group has made it untenable for us to continue effective representation,” the statement reads.
“Ethically, pursuing action against those who bullied Queen May becomes profoundly difficult when her own supporters exhibit comparable, if not greater, hostility. Consequently, we had no choice but to withdraw.
“The persistent bullying and trolling originating from Queen May’s presumed supporters present a severe operational and ethical challenge for DPA and our staff.
“Therefore, I cannot, in good conscience, continue to deploy our dedicated staff – young men and women into these cases. They face daily abuse from May’s supporters, having already endured similar attacks from Yul’s supporters.
“Queen May’s inability to meaningfully influence this increasingly toxic faction among her supporters is incompatible with the level of investment required for our representation. Our staff are human beings, and I have a paramount duty to protect their well-being.”
While condemning Yul’s actions in the marriage, DPA maintained that May was a “victim of marital abuse and betrayal” and promised to cooperate with her new representatives.
The law firm also said it would take legal action against “Judy Obasiyul Autism”, the alleged ringleader of the attacks against its staff.
“Let there be no misunderstanding: the chain of events leading to the conflict between Yul and Queen May rests squarely on Yul, significantly aided by Judy. Queen May deserves justice and societal protection,” DPA said.
“DPA condemns the actions of Yul and Judy that led to the conflict. DPA opposes forced polygamy, grounded in our belief in equal rights for men and women.
“DPA will work cooperatively with Queen May and her team to transition our work to any successor representatives she designates. Crucially, protecting the best interests of our client remains our obligation, even during and after withdrawal.
“We wish Queen May victory. She is a remarkable individual. We remain available to her and stand ready to cooperate with her new representatives should they have questions regarding our prior work.
“Moving forward, DPA will pursue recourse against the apparent leader of “May Nation,” operating under the pseudonym “Judy Obasiyul Autism,” regardless of their identity.”
