Latin Music Icon Sergio George Honored with First-Ever Global Google Doodle!

This week in Latin music has been marked by a series of significant announcements and initiatives, spanning from digital tributes to philanthropic efforts and major industry events. Billboard editors have highlighted these uplifting moments, showcasing the vibrant and evolving landscape of Latin music, from career milestones to new releases and important community contributions.
A notable event was Google's launch of its first-ever global Doodle dedicated to salsa, meticulously curated by the acclaimed producer, pianist, and arranger Sergio George. This initiative represents an "unprecedented recognition" for a genre that originated in Latino communities and has since achieved global acclaim. The tribute coincides with George's inaugural Salsa Festival, ¡ATACA SERGIO!, scheduled for September 21 at Miami’s Kaseya Center. The animated music video Doodle, released to honor Hispanic Heritage Month, features a remix of five iconic salsa anthems, including "I Like It" by Pete Rodríguez and "Mi Gente" by Héctor Lavoe. It also prominently displays classic salsa instruments such as the piano, conga, trombone, clave, and güiro, all brought to life under the creative direction of Jorge R. Canedo E. and Sergio George. Complementing the Doodle is a playlist titled DAME MÁS SALSA, featuring 15 tracks produced by Sergio George.
Colombian music sensation Karol G, set to headline Coachella next year, unveiled two new impactful projects in Colombia through her Con Cora Foundation. Using social media, Karol G announced the impending construction of Santa Fe de Icotea College in Maria la Baja, Bolivar, and Casa Con Cora in Medellin. Casa Con Cora is designed to be a sanctuary for women and girls facing vulnerable situations. Expressing her profound connection to these endeavors, Karol G captioned her Instagram post, emphasizing that such achievements give purpose to her work, driven by the inspiring stories of struggle and hope they represent.
BMI recently hosted its "Las Compositoras+" song camp, furthering its commitment to bolster its songwriters and amplify diverse voices within the música mexicana genre. This three-day creative retreat, held in Los Angeles in collaboration with songwriter Erika Vidrio, who led the sessions, brought together a diverse group of emerging and established talents. The lineup included Paulina B, Celimar, Amanda Coronel, Delilah, Lupita Infante, Michelle Maciel, Karen Moon, and Ashlee Valenzuela. Lilibeth Patron, BMI’s associate director, creative, Latin, articulated that the camp aimed to foster collaboration, support songwriters, and cultivate a vibrant creative community, particularly for female songwriters and creators in the LGBTQ+ community within música mexicana.
Billboard also made a significant announcement by revealing the full lineup for the 2025 Billboard Latin Music Week, which will return to The Fillmore Miami Beach from October 20 to 24. The star-studded roster for the week-long event now includes Aitana, Christian Alicea, Danny Ocean, Ivy Queen, Lenny Tavárez, Luck Ra, Lupita Infante, Olga Tañón, Rawayana, Silvestre Dangond, Suzette Quintanilla, Tokischa, and Yailin, among others. These new additions were disclosed during a press conference in Miami. Leila Cobo, chief content officer of Billboard Latin/Español, expressed excitement, highlighting that this will be their largest Latin Music Week ever, featuring 32 panels and over 100 guests, including key artists, executives, and content creators. She also noted the historical significance of The Fillmore as a venue where many prominent artists have performed.
Furthermore, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which commenced on September 15, Billboard Latin and Billboard Español editors began rolling out their list of the 75 Best Regional Mexican Acts of All Time. The initial segment unveiled Nos. 75-61. The comprehensive criteria for this esteemed list included vocal prowess, an extensive body of work, career longevity, industry accolades, Billboard chart achievements, transformative influence, and enduring generational and cultural impact.
