Latest Travel Update: Budapest, Braces for Severe Weather Conditions With The Possibility Flight and Rail Disruptions
Monday, July 7, 2025
Budapest and Hungary can expect major weather disruptions this week as parts of the country are hit by a corridor of thunderstorms, which could have implications for air and train travel. Commuters traveling towards or away from Budapest or anticipating traveling across Hungary during July 7-8, 2025, can expect heavy disruptions and possible cancellations. Budapest Airport and Hungary’s air traffic authority agency, HungaroControl, has issued an alert for potential disruptions in air traffic in response to heavy thunderstorms, hail, and windy conditions expected to disrupt flight movement.
According to official sources, including the Hungarian Meteorological Service (HungaroMet) and the National Air Navigation Services Provider (HungaroControl), temporary airspace restrictions and flight detours are expected to be introduced to ensure air safety as the storms move across the region. In addition, rail travel is also significantly impacted due to high winds and thunderstorms, which have caused damage to infrastructure, particularly around Lake Balaton.
Given these severe weather conditions, travelers are urged to stay informed through official sources and check their flight or train status regularly for updates. This advisory highlights the need for flexibility in travel plans as the weather system is likely to lead to widespread disruptions.
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), one of the busiest airports in the region, is expected to experience significant flight delays on July 7 and 8 due to the severe thunderstorms moving through Hungarian airspace. According to HungaroControl, temporary airspace restrictions may be imposed to ensure air traffic safety as strong thunderstorms, high winds, and hail move across the region. These restrictions could lead to delays, cancellations, and potential detours for inbound and outbound flights.
While efforts are being made by Budapest Airport and HungaroControl to minimize the disruption and keep air traffic moving, the weather conditions are expected to cause operational challenges. Passengers traveling to or from Budapest should regularly check the Budapest Airport website or their airline’s official channels for real-time updates on their flights. The airport advises passengers to stay informed about any changes to their departure or arrival times, as well as potential gate changes, to minimize any inconvenience.
Airlines are working to accommodate affected passengers, but it’s important to anticipate the possibility of longer wait times due to necessary detours and delays in air traffic. The weather system is expected to bring a substantial amount of rainfall, with potential hailstorms complicating flight paths. Passengers are encouraged to exercise patience as safety remains the highest priority.
The severe thunderstorms are also causing major disruptions to Hungary’s rail network. Strong winds and heavy rain have already resulted in significant damage to rail infrastructure around Lake Balaton, one of Hungary’s most popular tourist destinations. The national rail operator, MÁV, has reported that high winds reaching speeds of 150-170 km/h (93-105 mph) have torn off overhead power cables in the northern regions of the lake. On the southern shores, fallen trees have obstructed tracks, and more damage to the overhead cables has been reported.
Due to these impacts, many trains in the region are delayed or canceled, and travelers should expect significant disruptions in rail services, particularly around the Lake Balaton area. If you are planning to travel by train in Hungary, it is highly recommended to check for the latest updates on the MÁV website or use their mobile app to receive real-time notifications on train delays and cancellations.
With travel conditions potentially hazardous due to storm-related damage, alternative transportation options may be necessary for those traveling to or from the affected regions. Travelers heading to or from Lake Balaton or western Hungary should be prepared for potential delays, particularly in the next 24-48 hours.
As the cold front moves through Hungary, there will be a dramatic change in weather conditions. While eastern Hungary may still experience summer-like temperatures above 30°C (86°F), the western part of the country is already experiencing a significant drop in temperatures. By midweek, temperatures could fall as much as 15-20°C (27-36°F), bringing cooler air, which may feel more like early spring than mid-summer.
This sudden shift in temperature is not only uncomfortable but can also pose health risks, particularly for vulnerable individuals. Symptoms of health issues related to rapid temperature changes may include dizziness, headaches, fatigue, and circulatory problems. Travelers, especially those with existing health conditions, should be cautious and dress appropriately for the sudden chill.
Rainfall from the thunderstorms is expected to be substantial, especially in the western and northeastern regions of Hungary. Areas like Veszprém could see as much as 28mm of rain over the next several days, with other parts of the country expected to receive significant amounts of precipitation. This rainfall is welcome in parts of Hungary that have been experiencing drought conditions, but it may lead to localized flooding and slippery travel conditions.
While the temperature will decrease, UV radiation levels are expected to remain high, particularly in the middle of the day. Even though the cooler weather may reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses, travelers should continue to take precautions against the strong UV rays. Prolonged exposure to the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. can lead to sunburns, dehydration, and other health concerns. It is recommended to use sunscreen with a high SPF, wear protective clothing, and stay hydrated while outdoors.
Additionally, with the sudden shift in weather conditions, travelers should be aware of the health risks associated with sudden temperature drops. Those sensitive to rapid weather changes may experience symptoms such as muscle aches, dizziness, or difficulty concentrating. If you are planning to be outdoors for an extended period, be sure to dress in layers, carry water, and take breaks in sheltered areas when possible.
While Hungary endures severe thunderstorms and sudden change in weather, commuters must remain vigilant and prepared for disruptions. Budapest Airport, MÁV, and HungaroControl are doing all they can do to ensure the smoothest experience possible, but weather sometimes introduces inevitable delays. It would be best to remain updated with the most current reports streaming in from credible sources.
For the most current information regarding flight delay, cancellation, and traffic, visit Budapest Airport’s official page at www.bud.hu or your air carrier’s site. For train schedules, visit MÁV’s page at www.mavcsoport.hu.
We urge all passengers to take precautions in this highly unpredictable weather condition and be ready for potential disruptions. Be safe, and we hope your trips through Budapest and Hungary go as smoothly as possible.
