An unexpected collaboration is set to grace HBO, as Larry David, former President Barack Obama, and former first lady Michelle Obama are joining forces for a new, still-untitled sketch comedy series. Announced on Thursday, July 10, by the network, the limited half-hour series will delve into American history, specifically in honor of "America’s 250th anniversary," also known as the Semiquincentennial.
The genesis of this unique project reportedly stemmed from the Obamas' desire to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary and celebrate its history, with Larry David humorously interjecting into their plans. The series is penned by the 78-year-old David and his long-time creative partner Jeff Schaffer, 55, who will also take on directing duties. Audiences can anticipate "noteworthy" guest stars to appear in the show.

Production of the series falls under the purview of the Obamas' Higher Ground production company. A robust team of executive producers will oversee the project, including Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Larry David, Jeff Schaffer, Vinnie Malhotra, and Ethan Lewis.
Both David and former President Obama have shared their thoughts on this novel partnership. Barack Obama, 63, remarked in a statement, "I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems. Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David."
David, known for his signature wit, offered a comical explanation for his return to television after the conclusion of his acclaimed series, Curb Your Enthusiasm, in 2024 after 12 seasons. He stated he yearned for a simple life as a beekeeper, but after his bees mysteriously vanished, he felt compelled to return to ease the loss of his beloved hive.
This new venture marks a significant moment for both parties. For David Larry, it signifies his comeback to the small screen following the successful wrap of Curb Your Enthusiasm. For Higher Ground, the Obamas' production company, this is believed to be their inaugural project outside of their multi-year deal with Netflix, which they expanded in June 2024.
Amy Gravitt, EVP, head of HBO & HBO Max comedy programming, expressed enthusiasm for David's return and the historical focus, while Schaffer added that the characters David portrays in the series were largely ignored by history, and "that’s a good thing." A premiere date for the series has yet to be announced.
