Lakers rocked by injury woes: Ayton out, LeBron hurting!

The Los Angeles Lakers experienced a challenging Thursday night in Denver, ultimately falling to the Nuggets with a score of 120-113. The loss was compounded by early injuries to starting center Deandre Ayton and a late exit by superstar LeBron James, alongside a contentious technical foul called on Luka Doncic that brings him perilously close to a one-game suspension.
Deandre Ayton's evening was cut short just four minutes and thirty seconds into the game. After picking up a foul and with the Lakers already trailing 15-3, Ayton checked out due to left knee soreness and did not return. This incident follows a period where he missed two games prior to the All-Star break due to right knee soreness. Teammate Marcus Smart conveyed Ayton's frustration, noting, "He's down. For him, it sucked for him not to be out there in the game. He tried to go, and it just didn't feel right for him." Smart also acknowledged the backlash Ayton has faced regarding his effort, emphasizing that Ayton understands and wants to contribute to the team, but is struggling to find what works.
LeBron James also suffered an injury late in the fourth quarter, banging his left elbow on the floor with 4:05 remaining after scoring a layup and absorbing contact from Denver's Nikola Jokic. Despite the contact, no foul was called. James described the injury as "pretty sore right now," akin to a "funny bone situation, but like, super more intense." He attempted to continue playing after a timeout but eventually sat out the final 22.3 seconds. Post-game, James iced his elbow, and his athletic trainer applied a compression sleeve. His availability for the Lakers' back-to-back game against the Indiana Pacers on Friday remains uncertain, with James stating it's "day-to-day."
Beyond the injuries, James expressed significant frustration with the officiating, particularly the lack of a foul call on Jokic. When asked about the explanation, he retorted, "It's the same s---. 'Marginal.' It's the same s---. ... That's all they keep saying is 'marginal.' I'm so f---ing tired of that word. It doesn't make no sense." This sentiment of dissatisfaction with the referees was echoed by another Lakers player, Luka Doncic.
Doncic was assessed his 15th technical foul of the season by referee Dedric Taylor with 5:43 left in the second quarter. Crew chief Ed Malloy clarified that the technical was for "using profanity directed towards a referee" and was called on the defensive end without stopping offensive transition. Doncic, however, felt unfairly targeted, stating, "I heard three other players say the exact same sentence and didn't get a tech. And that's my problem. ... This is the first thing I said, no warning or nothing. But I heard three other players say the exact same thing, and nothing."
With 15 technical fouls, Doncic is now just one away from triggering a mandatory one-game suspension, a penalty he has faced twice before in his career, though on both occasions, his 16th technical was rescinded. When questioned about his commitment to avoid a 16th technical this season, Doncic offered a cautious "We'll see. Can't predict the future," highlighting the ongoing tension and unpredictability of the situation for the Lakers.
