Legendary Lakers Coach Pat Riley Honored with Bronze Statue at Crypto.com Arena

An 8-foot bronze statue of Lakers coaching legend Pat Riley now stands outside Crypto.com Arena, capturing his signature Giorgio Armani suit and iconic "Showtime" raised fist.
The statue’s base inscription reads: “There will come a time when you are challenged, and when that time comes, you must plant your feet. You must stand firm. You must make a point. About who you are, what you do, and where you come from. When that time comes, you do it.”
Riley, serving as Miami Heat team president, voiced support for NBA coaches returning to formal coats and ties, contrasting the casual dress code adopted in 2020.
The unveiling drew basketball luminaries including Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Dwyane Wade, Lakers acting owner Jeanie Buss, and acclaimed actor Michael Douglas, who shared that Riley’s slick-backed hair inspired his “Wall Street” portrayal of Gordon Gekko.
Riley led the Lakers from 1981 to 1990, winning four NBA championships in 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988, famously guaranteeing a repeat title at the '87 parade.
He now joins an elite group as the eighth Laker with a statue on Star Plaza, alongside Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Elgin Baylor, Chick Hearn, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, acknowledging the giants who helped him succeed.
At a pregame press conference, Riley reflected on recruiting LeBron James to the Heat in 2010, forming the celebrated "big three" with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, praising their Finals run while admitting he wished he could have retained James for a potential decade-long dynasty.
Riley also endorsed current Lakers coach JJ Redick, calling him a “fiery guy” and “tough as nails” shooter, seeing in him qualities reminiscent of his own early career, while highlighting stars like Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves, and LeBron James as keys to Redick’s future success.
