Lagos submits bid to host 2026 National Youth Games
Lagos State has formally submitted its bid to host the 2026 edition of the National Youth Games (NYG), reaffirming its interest in staging one of Nigeria’s premier youth sports competitions.
The bid, signed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, highlights Lagos State’s infrastructure, logistics capacity, and historical involvement in major sporting events as key advantages. It also reflects the state’s broader strategy to promote youth development through sports.
In a statement issued by the Lagos delegation, the state described itself as “Nigeria’s foremost economic and cultural epicenter,” and emphasized its readiness to “foster sporting excellence and nurture youth talent across the nation.”
The document cited Lagos’ facilities, including the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Mobolaji Johnson Arena, and Rowe Park, as well as its transport systems and hospitality sector, as part of its capacity to host the event successfully.
The bid was presented on behalf of the Lagos State Government by a delegation led by Hon. Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission. Other members included Mr. Nunayon Olumide Travih, Director of Sports; Dr. Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, Director of School Sports; and Mr. Dare Orimoloye, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports.
The National Youth Games is a multi-sport competition aimed at identifying and nurturing young athletes across Nigeria. It serves as a platform for developing future representatives in national and international sports competitions.
The most recent edition, held in Asaba, Delta State in 2024, saw Team Delta emerge overall winners with a total of 111 medals — 46 gold, 31 silver, and 34 bronze.
The host state for the 2026 edition is expected to be announced following a review of the submitted bids.
