Lagos State Demolishes 19 Buildings at Trade Fair Complex, Sparks Outcry from Traders
The Lagos State Government commenced a major demolition exercise on September 25 at the New Mandela Plaza within the popular Trade Fair Complex, targeting at least 19 buildings. Authorities justified the action, describing the structures as illegal developments, erected without statutory approvals, defective, or encroaching on road setbacks and drainage.
The operation involved a coordinated effort from multiple state agencies, including the Lagos State Urban Development Ministry, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), and the Office of Infrastructure. Members of the Lagos House of Assembly and armed security personnel were present to oversee the demolition.
Reacting to the exercise, Joe Igbokwe, an APC chieftain, expressed shock and questioned the rationale on Facebook, revealing that he, along with Peter Obi and the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, serves as patron of the market.
The demolition has caused significant distress among affected traders. One distraught investor stated that no fewer than 19 buildings, each valued at over N150 million, were destroyed. The trader lamented, “If government doesn’t want companies or development here, they should just come out and say it. People have invested their life savings here. Over 19 buildings are in that plaza,” highlighting the heavy financial and personal toll on investors.
