Lagos Bloodbath: Shocking Toll of 69 Dead, 246 Injured in Q1 2026 Road Accidents

Lagos State experienced a significant number of road accidents in the first quarter of 2026, resulting in the deaths of at least 69 people and injuries to an additional 246 individuals. These figures, disclosed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, during an interview on Sunday, highlight ongoing safety concerns on the state’s extensive road network. LASTMA officials responded to more than 600 accident scenes between January and March, underscoring the persistent human cost associated with traffic infractions and crashes.
In response to these challenges, LASTMA intensified its enforcement operations during the period. The authority addressed over 900 violations involving heavy-duty vehicles, including trucks and articulated vehicles. Furthermore, approximately 4,900 physical patrol and intervention exercises were conducted across the state, complementing technology-based monitoring systems that recorded 17,942 traffic offences. Bakare-Oki reiterated LASTMA's firm stance on compliance, stating, “LASTMA has zero tolerance for traffic infractions,” and confirmed that vehicles impounded for violations are swiftly brought before the Lagos State Mobile Court.
Despite the concerning statistics, Bakare-Oki noted positive developments in traffic management and operational efficiency. He reported an improvement in service delivery for the first quarter, particularly in reducing travel time for Lagos residents. This progress was supported by a comprehensive overhaul of traffic equipment and recovery vehicles, which were strategically repositioned to enhance response times to incidents. Additionally, LASTMA initiated training and re-orientation programs aimed at improving the performance and professionalism of its personnel.
Looking ahead, the LASTMA boss outlined plans to further bolster workforce capacity through an extensive training initiative. The agency aims to train over 1,000 personnel, with the process already underway through both internal and external programs. Consultants have been engaged for specialized training, and in the coming months, high-level capacity-building initiatives will be intensified for all staff, reflecting a commitment to ongoing improvement in traffic management across Lagos State.
