Labour Shake-Up: Lucy Powell Claims Deputy Leadership in Landslide Victory

Lucy Powell has been elected as the Labour Party’s new Deputy Leader, triumphing over her rival, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, in a contest widely viewed as a referendum on the party’s future direction under Keir Starmer. The result, announced on Saturday morning, saw Powell secure 87,407 votes, representing 54% of the ballots cast, while Phillipson received 73,536 votes (46%). The election, prompted by the resignation of fellow Greater Manchester MP Angela Rayner due to a tax scandal, saw a significantly low turnout of 16.6% among 970,642 eligible voters, a stark contrast to the 58.8% turnout in the 2020 deputy leadership election.
In her victory speech, Powell, who served as Commons leader until her recent sacking in Starmer’s reshuffle, outlined a vision for a more engaged and values-driven Labour Party. She emphatically stated that the party "won't win by trying to out-Reform Reform," emphasizing the need to "wrestle back the political megaphone" and set a stronger agenda to counter figures like Nigel Farage. Powell stressed the importance of offering hope and "the big change the country’s crying out for," advocating for a clearer sense of purpose, identity, and Labour values. She directly addressed concerns that "people feel that this government is not being bold enough in delivering the kind of change we promised," vowing to be a champion for Labour's values and boldness.
Powell's platform also included a strong call for unity through collective purpose rather than "command-and-control" tactics, asserting that "our members and our elected representatives are not our weakness, they’re our key asset." She highlighted the importance of debating, listening, and hearing diverse voices as a source of strength, not dissent. Both Powell and Phillipson notably called for the scrapping of the controversial two-child benefit cap, a policy that has previously caused parliamentary rebellion within the party. Powell's analysis of the country's problems centered on deep-seated inequalities, failed "trickle-down economics," and a system that has benefited the few over the many, contrasting this with Reform UK's focus on immigration.
Keir Starmer welcomed Powell’s victory, acknowledging the recent setbacks for Labour, including a "bad result in Wales" where the party lost a Senedd by-election to Plaid Cymru. He underscored the urgency of renewal within the party, stating that "people need to look out their window and see change and renewal in their community, opportunities for their children, public services rebuilt, the cost-of-living crisis tackled." Starmer condemned what he described as a move towards a "very dark place" by Conservatives and Reform UK, referencing divisive rhetoric on immigration, and called for unity across the country to defeat such politics.
The contest itself grew increasingly fractious in its final weeks, with Powell being labeled the "Momentum candidate" and accusations of her rival potentially costing the party the election. Despite being seen as Downing Street's preferred candidate, Bridget Phillipson offered her congratulations to Powell and pledged continued work as Education Secretary, emphasizing the need for the party to unite and focus on its achievements rather than past mistakes. Powell, a Manchester-born MP for Manchester Central since 2012, paid tribute to both Phillipson and Angela Rayner, acknowledging Rayner’s significant contributions and the "big shoes" she leaves to fill. Unlike Rayner, Powell will not assume the title of Deputy Prime Minister, which is held by David Lammy. Powell’s election marks the fourth time a woman has held the deputy leadership position within the Labour Party, following Margaret Beckett, Harriet Harman, and Angela Rayner. Her commitment remains to help "change Britain for the better" and serve the country.
