LA SAL, Utah (KUTV) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency authorized the use of federal funds to help with the costs of fighting the Deer Creek Fire.

The fire, burning in San Juan County about 30 miles southeast of Moab, started on Thursday and has burned more than 7,500 acres.

The fire is 0% contained.

Acting FEMA Region 8 Administrator Katherine Fox reportedly received a request for a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant on Saturday afternoon. She determined the fire "threatened such destruction that it would constitute a major disaster," a press release states.

The fire has destroyed at least ten homes and is threatening another 140. An additional 600 structures are threatened, as well as power lines, transformers, and watersheds.

"The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires," the press release states. "These grants do not provide assistance to individual home or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fire."
