Kwara Security Crisis: NYSC Camp Abruptly Relocated Amid Bandit Fears!

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Permanent Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, has been temporarily relocated to the Kwara State Polytechnic campus along Old Jebba Road, Ilorin. This decisive move comes in response to escalating security concerns, including a series of terrorist attacks, abductions, and killings that have plagued parts of the state, particularly communities in Edu and Patigi local government areas.
Mr. Joshua Onifade, the NYSC Coordinator in Kwara State, confirmed the relocation during a news conference held in Ilorin. He explained that the decision was necessary to allay the fears of prospective corps members, especially those visiting the state for the first time. Onifade appreciated the Kwara State government's unrelenting efforts and the proactive stance of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in prioritizing the welfare and safety of corps members.
The relocation was approved by the state government following an increase in insecurity around the permanent camp. The orientation course for the 2025 Batch ‘B’ stream 2 corps members is scheduled to commence nationwide on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, with approximately 1,800 corps members expected to participate in the 21-day exercise in Kwara. Corps members are expected to report between September 24 and October 14, 2025.
To guarantee the safety of participants, soldiers and other security forces will be deployed to the temporary venue in Ilorin, and a delegation from NYSC headquarters is slated to inspect the new site. The coordinator affirmed the readiness to host the orientation course, assuring that the welfare of all participants will be safeguarded throughout the three-week program.
Recent reports highlight the severity of the security situation that necessitated this relocation. Gunmen, suspected to be bandits, recently killed a vigilante commander identified as Tetengi in Kakafu village, Lade District, Patigi Local Government Area. The incident occurred when a large number of attackers stormed the community, indiscriminately opening fire and causing widespread panic. Some residents are also believed to have been abducted during the invasion, further underscoring the volatile security landscape in the region.
