Kwara Insecurity Spurs Military Deployment, Senate Calls for Permanent Base

The Nigerian Army has initiated a significant deployment, dispatching a 'full brigade' along with heavy equipment to the Kwara South senatorial district. This strategic move aims to intensify ongoing operations against the persistent banditry and kidnapping activities that have plagued communities in the region. For an extended period, residents of Kwara have endured repeated attacks, resulting in fatalities and the displacement of numerous individuals.
Rafiu Ajakaye, the chief press secretary to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, confirmed the deployment on Wednesday. He stated that troops are actively moving through villages surrounding Oke Ode and Babanla in the Ifelodun Local Government Area. The scope of this operation is set to expand into Edu and Patigi local governments, with a primary objective of thoroughly searching and clearing the dense forests frequently utilized as hideouts by kidnappers and other criminal elements.
Governor AbdulRazaq expressed profound gratitude for the unwavering support from President Bola Tinubu and lauded the military's renewed and concerted efforts to restore peace and safety within the state. The Governor disclosed that he and President Tinubu had previously discussed the security situation during a meeting held in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, over the past weekend. AbdulRazaq affirmed the state government's commitment, stating, “We will not spare any resources in support of the military, DSS, police, and other security agencies as they work to strengthen security of lives and properties.”
Expressing optimism regarding the outcome of the operation, Governor AbdulRazaq added, “We are upbeat that this operation, as part of the Operation Fasan Yanma, will eliminate all forms of threats in affected areas in Kwara South and Kwara North.” He reiterated his appreciation for the President and the security agencies, emphasizing the necessity to double efforts to protect the populace. The Governor conveyed strong confidence in the leadership of Brigadier General A.A. Babatunde, who is heading the Army Brigade, expecting them to successfully fulfill this crucial task of clearing the entire affected regions.
Furthermore, Governor AbdulRazaq extended his commendations to other key officials and bodies for their collaborative support. These include the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Chief of Army Staff, the General Officer Commanding of the 2nd Division, and all other officers who have contributed to the ongoing efforts to secure Kwara State.
