Kruger Park Horror: Urgent Security Clampdown After Tragic Tourist Deaths
South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced immediate plans to bolster security measures within the isolated regions of the iconic Kruger National Park. This critical decision follows the tragic discovery last Friday of two tourists who had gone missing in the park since Thursday evening. The bodies were located near a river in the northern section of the park, prompting a large-scale search operation.
Speaking to media members on Sunday at Skukuza, SANParks Head of Communication and Spokesperson, Reynold Thakhuli, underscored the unprecedented nature of this incident. "I would like to extend our condolences to the family and affected friends as well. It is indeed a tragic incident. We've never really seen this kind of incident in the 100 years of the Kruger National Park. This is the very first time that we are seeing something of this nature," Thakhuli stated.
Preliminary investigations conducted by park rangers have revealed that while the tourists' vehicle remains unfound, tyre tracks suggest it may have exited the park through a fence into neighbouring Mozambique. Thakhuli confirmed, "The vehicle has not been found, but our rangers have done some preliminary investigations, and it has been discovered that tyre tracks are actually pointing us to the car having exited the park through a fence in Mozambique." He further clarified that the vehicle did not use any official exit point, despite the park's advanced surveillance. "We've got technology within the park. We have seen it as it came in, and we've seen it on the days that they were here in the park, but we have not seen it since Thursday when they disappeared," he added.
The incident has compelled SANParks to re-evaluate its security protocols in remote sections, notwithstanding the existing "high-class security technology" already deployed. Thakhuli affirmed that this event has initiated "another process that we need to embark on in terms of ensuring that even those areas that are isolated, we can have some security there." SANParks is expected to release a detailed statement outlining specific mitigation measures to enhance security across the park.
SANParks executives and police representatives met with the victims' family on Saturday, pledging continuous support throughout this difficult period. The family shared that the couple had a deep affection for Kruger National Park and were not prone to venturing into dangerous areas unnecessarily. The family is scheduled to visit the park on Monday, where SANParks will assist with arrangements, including the transportation of the deceased, reiterating their commitment to supporting the family entirely.
Meanwhile, Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Willie Aucamp, confirmed he had been briefed on the incident. He has engaged with SANParks leadership to ensure full cooperation with the ongoing investigation by the South African Police Service. Minister Aucamp extended his profound condolences on behalf of SANParks and the Department, stating, "The SAPS and SANParks have located and notified the family of this tragedy."
