Knicks center Hukporti might play himself into bigger role - Newsday
LAS VEGAS — The Knicks' summer league squad consists almost exclusively of players fighting for a spot in the NBA or, for the ones already with contracts, a place on the fringes of the rotation. But for Ariel Hukporti, it could be something more.
The 23-year-old center has shown glimpses of offensive and defensive talent, good enough for the team to pick up his option for the upcoming season, and maybe good enough for him to be a part of much bigger decisions for the front office.
While the Knicks obtained Karl-Anthony Towns just ahead of last season as the starting center, there is some uncertainty with the arrival of a new head coach in Mike Brown. Will Brown opt to play him at center or shift him to power forward as Tom Thibodeau did late in the postseason, pairing him with Mitchell Robinson. And perhaps the bigger question with regards to Hukporti is, what will the Knicks do with Robinson, who is playing on a $12.9 million expiring contract.
If Hukporti has shown enough — either in his limited rookie season or in the Las Vegas Summer League — could the Knicks move Robinson, one of the most valuable trade chips they possess? While Robinson has been an elite rebounder and rim protector, he remains limited in offensive ability and in the final year of his contract would the Knicks prefer to get a return for him rather than extend him with his injury history?
Brown was asked about how he’d approach the possibility of playing them together, but was vague on what he anticipated.
“Once I get my staff together and we dive more into it, we’ll figure out all those types of things,” Brown said in his introductory news conference last week. “I’m excited that they’re both on the team because they’re two different players. Mitch is a vertical threat. KAT, as you know, is a space threat. And so to have the versatility that those two guys bring to the table is going to be a lot of fun.”
Hukporti played in 35 games last season but saw his regular season cut short when he suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee on February 25. The injury shut him down for the final 24 games (coincidentally the exact time that Robinson made his season debut.
Hukporti has not dominated in the summer, putting up six points and five rebounds with two blocked shots in 20 minutes in the opening game and then scoring nine points with 13 rebounds (six offensive) and five blocked shots against Boston Sunday.
The Knicks picked up their first win of summer league with a 97-93 win over the Nets on Tuesday. Hukporti didn’t put up any eye-catching numbers but there were moments — one sequence where he deftly found Anton Watson cutting to the rim for a layup. Then on the other end he found himself isolated against Nets rookie point guard Ben Saraf and stayed in front of him and blocked a layup.
He’s a very skilled player," Knicks summer league coach Jordan Brink said. "He does a little bit of everything. He understands his role. He’s not going to get a lot of touches to score. He knows that he needs to set screens, roll hard, rebound, take care of the ball when we do give him situations to pass. But he knows that that’s his role and he embraces it."
After struggling in the first two games, Tyler Kolek was the most dominant player on the floor Tuesday — scoring 23 of his 25 points in the first half. MarJon Beauchamp also rebounded from struggles, too, scoring 25 points . . . Kevin McCullar (nasal contusion) and Pacome Dadiet (sprained big toe) were both inactive Tuesday. James Nnaji, who was ruled out for much of the second half Sunday with back tightness, did play.
