Kipchoge Discusses Possibility of Breaking Kiptum's Marathon Record

Eliud Kipchoge anticipates that Kelvin Kiptum's men's marathon world record will soon be surpassed. Kiptum set the record at 2:00:35 during the 2023 Chicago Marathon. Tragically, Kiptum died in a car accident in February 2024. Kipchoge is set to compete in the London Marathon, aiming for his fifth victory there.
Kelvin Kiptum's record, established in October 2023, has remained unbroken, but Kipchoge believes this won't last. Kiptum had a short but impactful career, participating in three marathons before his untimely death on February 11, 2024. His debut was at the Valencia Marathon in 2022, where he won with a time of 2:01:53, marking the fastest debut marathon ever. He also set a course record at the 2023 London Marathon with a time of 2:01:25.
At the 2023 Chicago Marathon, Kiptum delivered a performance, setting a world record of 2:00:35, thus taking 34 seconds off Kipchoge’s 2022 record. He was the first to complete a marathon in under 2:01. His world record was ratified shortly before his death. Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, both died in a road accident.
Since Kiptum's record, no one has come close to breaking it. The closest attempt was by Sisay Lemma at the Valencia Marathon in December 2023, clocking 2:01:48. Sebastian Sawe also recorded 2:02:05 in Valencia. Kiptum reportedly planned to be the first to run an official marathon in under two hours.
Kipchoge, who broke the world record in both 2018 and 2022, has faced challenges recently. His last marathon win was in Berlin in 2023. He is confident that Kiptum's record is breakable. He stated that fitness is the most important factor, followed by technology, nutrition, and shoes. Kipchoge emphasized his belief in limitless potential, encouraging others to break the record.
Eight of the top 10 fastest marathon runners are from Kenya. Ruth Chepngetich, also from Kenya, holds the women's world record. In a related story, Kipchoge expressed his support for Manchester United to recover next season, amidst their struggles in the Premier League.
