Kimmel Silenced! Free Speech Fears Erupt After Charlie Kirk Comments Lead to Show Suspension

ABC has announced the indefinite suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” following comments made by the late-night host regarding the killing of Charlie Kirk. This decision came just hours after the Trump-appointed chair of the US broadcast regulator threatened broadcasters’ licenses if action was not taken against Kimmel, and after one of the largest TV station owners, Nexstar Media, also stated its objection and intention to preempt the show. Donald Trump lauded the move, calling it “great news for America” and extending apparent threats to NBC late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers.

The controversy stems from Kimmel's monologues delivered in the wake of Kirk's death. On Monday, less than a week after Kirk was shot dead in Utah, Kimmel stated, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the Maga gang trying to characterize this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” The suspect, Tyler Robinson, faces charges including aggravated murder. On Tuesday, Kimmel further commented, “Many in Maga-land are working very hard to capitalize on the murder of Charlie Kirk,” and accused US vice-president JD Vance of blaming the left for Kirk’s death without evidence.
