Kid Rock Eyes Salvation with Eminem Collab on Christian Rock Album

Kid Rock, the artist known for transitioning from rapper to rocker and country singer, is now embracing a Christian music direction with his upcoming album, “Halfway to Jesus.” Announced on Thursday, October 1, the 17-track collection is slated for release on October 17. The first single, “James 1:17 (Jesus Is King),” is described as a Bob Seger-coded gospel rock anthem, where Rock, born Robert James Ritchie, seeks forgiveness for past blasphemy.

The album features notable collaborations, including a track with fellow Detroit MC Eminem titled “7 Sins,” and assistance from Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox and Jimmie Allen on the album’s title track. Other song titles on the collection, such as “Why Don’t You Look Into Jesus,” “Water Into Wine,” “Me and Jesus,” “God Is Good,” and “High Road,” clearly indicate Rock’s full embrace of his religious side. The album is set to conclude with what appears to be a cover of Lee Greenwood’s iconic song, “God Bless the USA.”

The album’s artwork visually symbolizes Rock’s spiritual journey, depicting him literally halfway up a mountain, striving to reach a glowing crucifix, with the devil close behind. In a promotional video shared on X, Rock solemnly recited lyrics from the gospel rock single, emphasizing themes of redemption and salvation, stating, “I have wandered through the ages/ And flipped through all your pages/ Every stage of life I’ve gone through/ I’ve refused to compromise.” The official music video for “James 1:17 (Jesus Is King)” even shows Rock bathed in holy light, seemingly raptured to heaven, only to return to a stage in a Tupac T-shirt, fronting a rock band accompanied by a gospel choir.

According to Complex, which reportedly previewed the album’s forward, Rock explains the rationale behind his collaboration with Eminem. He stated his pride in the guest artists, particularly Eminem, noting that their track addresses the importance of finding common ground in a divided nation. Rock reportedly writes, “His verse speaks to something we’ve talked about and that really needs to be heard: we differ politically and on other things, but we’ve stayed friends through it all. We hope that sets an example for people who’ve lost friends or stopped talking to family because they think differently.”

This isn't the first time Kid Rock and Eminem have collaborated; their past work includes the track “F–k Off” from Rock’s 1998 album “Devil Without a Cause,” a remix of Trick-Trick’s 2013 song “From tha D,” and Rock’s cameo in Eminem’s 2013 “Berzerk” video.

Rock elaborated on his spiritual shift in an August interview with Fox & Friends, attributing it to a “spiritual journey” and a “calling through James 1:17,” noting that his middle name is James and his birthday is January 17. He explained that the passage signifies that all good things come from God. Reflecting on his past, Rock shared that growing up Catholic, he found the church music unengaging and sought better musical experiences in Baptist and non-denominational churches. He ultimately decided to create his own Christian music, blending rock and roll, country, and hip-hop to celebrate his faith.
