Kid Cudi’s ‘Maui Wowie’ Surges Onto Hot 100, 17 Years After Its Release

Seventeen years after its original release, Kid Cudi’s track “Maui Wowie” has officially landed on the Billboard Hot 100, debuting at No. 71 for the week of October 25. The surprising resurgence has been fueled by a viral TikTok trend, where fans humorously dangle from street crosswalk signs while singing along to the breezy standout from Cudi’s A Kid Named Cudi mixtape.
Scott Mescudi, better known as Kid Cudi, shared his excitement on Instagram, writing, “This is MEGA!!! Debuting #71 on the @billboard charts 17 years later.” He called the track “a true example of timeless music” and thanked fans for driving its revival, encouraging them, “Lets keep it going yall!!!”
The artist himself joined the trend, performing the song while hanging from a crosswalk sign in front of Progressive Field in Cleveland. The video, featuring Cudi singing the iconic lyrics, “Goin’ back to Honolulu just to get that/ That Maui Wowie, that Maui Wowie,” has amassed over 22 million views, further amplifying the track’s reach. TikTok user @aaronxbrownn is credited with initiating the viral trend in September.
“Maui Wowie” has also charted elsewhere, debuting at No. 24 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 2 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100. This milestone comes shortly after Cudi announced a temporary hiatus from music in September, teasing that his next album would be “a while” away but promising a surprise to uplift his fans. The unexpected chart success of “Maui Wowie” offers a timely and uplifting moment for both the artist and his dedicated audience.
