Untying Kantai scooped the Best Writing TV Series award during the 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) held on May 11 at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, Nigeria.

The series, which airs on Showmax, was written and produced by the duo under their production company Phil-It Productions.

Their team also celebrated another win for their project Makosa ni Yangu, which took home the award for Best Indigenous Language.

While Mutua did not attend the event in person, he expressed his joy and gratitude, saying:

“Four years ago, thanks to your unwavering support, we started this film journey. These right here are the fruits of your labour. A true depiction of the Wakurugenzi Effect. Two nominations both converted into wins. Our region’s flag is up high,” he wrote.

He went on to thank the Phil-It writing team, the cast, and Showmax viewers, saying:

“For Untying Kantai, I’d like to personally thank the Phil-It Think Tank. You’re the reason the trophy is coming to Nairobi. My fellow writers, thank you for seeing the project through from the writing room to the screen. For Makosa ni Yangu, the entire cast, you delivered exceptionally well. Barikiweni sana.”

His wife, Judy Nyawira, also shared a touching tribute online, showing the moment she watched on TV as her husband’s film clinched the award.

“To Abel and Phil, I’m so proud of you. Watching you build, brick by brick, with so much heart and intention is inspiring. I pray that God keeps you both strong and in this world long enough to fully enjoy the fruits of your labour. You deserve every bit of it," she wrote.

Untying Kantai stars Benson Ojuwa and follows the story of Kantai, who stumbles upon a shady but profitable business opportunity.

Against his better judgement, he dives headfirst into a world of secrets, deceit, and danger, setting off a rollercoaster of drama and dark humour.

Separately, a brand-new reality series is about to light up local screens, marking the fifth chapter of the hugely popular Mommy Club franchise.

Titled The Mommy Club NBO, the Kenyan edition will premiere on Showmax this month, giving viewers an inside look into the lives of five well-known mums.

From juggling motherhood to chasing dreams and embracing Nairobi’s fast-paced lifestyle, the show promises drama, inspiration, and glitz.

The cast includes familiar faces like Jackie Matubia, Lynne Njihia, DJ Pierra Makena, Carey Priscilla, and South African content creator Ofentse Tsipa.
