Kenya’s Sh15bn Power Project Set to Boost Amboseli Tourism

President William Ruto has commissioned a major power transmission project aimed at improving electricity reliability in Kajiado South and supporting economic activity around Amboseli National Park.

The Sh15 billion project connects Sultan Hamud in Makueni County to Loitoktok in Kajiado through a 108-kilometre, 132kV transmission line and a new 132/33kV Loitoktok Substation. It also includes an extension of the existing Sultan Hamud Substation, strengthening the region’s capacity to transmit and distribute electricity.

The project is expected to reduce the frequent power outages that have affected households, businesses and tourism operators across southern Kajiado. Hotels, lodges and other hospitality businesses serving visitors to Amboseli depend on consistent electricity for their daily operations, while improved supply is also expected to support commercial activity and services in surrounding communities.

Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira said the reinforced network would provide a more stable electricity supply and create better conditions for economic growth in the region.

The commissioning forms part of the Kenyan government’s wider effort to expand and strengthen electricity infrastructure in underserved areas. Beyond improving household and business access to reliable power, the investment is intended to support tourism, industrialisation and local economic development, particularly in areas where unreliable electricity has constrained commercial activity.

For the tourism industry around Amboseli, more dependable power could improve operating conditions for hospitality businesses and strengthen the region’s capacity to accommodate continued visitor activity.
