Kenya's Heartfelt Farewell: Nation Bids Emotional Goodbye to Political Icon Raila

The nation united in solemn remembrance for the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, with comprehensive state funeral arrangements underway. The National State Funeral Committee, chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, provided crucial updates on Saturday’s program, detailing the logistical aspects of the revered leader's final journey. It was announced that Raila Odinga’s mortal remains would be airlifted by the Kenya Defence Forces to Mamboleo Grounds in Kisumu, scheduled to arrive at approximately 8 a.m. Members of the public were kindly requested to be settled by 7 a.m. to respectfully receive the arrival of their leader's body. A public viewing of Raila Odinga’s body was planned to take place at the Mamboleo Grounds for the majority of the day, ensuring that all who wished had the opportunity to pay their final respects. Following the viewing, the body was to be transported to Bondo for an overnight stay, ahead of the burial on Sunday at Kang’o ka Jaramogi.

Amidst the profound grief, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, also serving as the acting Orange Democratic Movement party leader, made an impassioned plea for a peaceful procession. Speaking from the Deputy President’s Karen residence, Senator Oginga called for police restraint, specifically addressing a tear gas incident during a public viewing event on Thursday. Expressing his disappointment, he stated, “Raila should not be tear-gassed in death. He has been tear-gassed when he was alive. Please let us not cause a situation where he is tear-gassed again when we are escorting him.” He further urged the public to uphold peace and respect the solemnity of the occasion, emphasizing that this was not a time for actions that could lead to harm or infirmity, and encouraging restraint in their mourning to ensure a peaceful send-off for their beloved brother.

The emotional impact of Raila Odinga’s passing was deeply felt across the country, marked by intense displays of anguish and devotion from his supporters. The commotion witnessed upon his body's arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) underscored the depth of public sentiment. President William Ruto himself was captured fighting back tears as he paid his respects, viewing the late former Prime Minister’s body lying in state at the Parliament Building, a moment that resonated with many. Thousands of Kenyans, braving a chilly morning heavy with sorrow, converged at Nyayo Stadium for the State Funeral Service on October 17, 2025. This massive crowd, waving flags, hoisting symbols of the hammer, and chanting patriotic songs, paid their last tributes to a national icon. Millions more were glued to their television screens, following the proceedings as the country came to a standstill.

The State Funeral Service at Nyayo National Stadium was a solemn and grand affair, filled with mourners and dignitaries who gathered to honor the fallen leader. The day began with full police and military honors, setting a dignified tone for the proceedings. A poignant church service was held, followed by numerous glowing tributes from various speakers, reflecting on Raila Odinga’s immense contributions and legacy. This state service marked the formal commencement of Raila’s final journey to his ultimate resting place at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, concluding a period of national mourning and celebration of his extraordinary life.
