Kenya's Billion-Shilling Drug Mystery: Who's Behind the Haul?
&format=jpeg)
Kenya has achieved one of the largest drug seizures in East Africa's history, successfully intercepting a substantial consignment of methamphetamine with an estimated street value exceeding Sh.8.2 billion (equivalent to USD 63 million). The significant bust unfolded in the Indian Ocean, approximately 630 kilometers east of the port of Mombasa, involving a stateless vessel named "Mash Allah."
The operation was initiated following credible intelligence received by Kenyan security agencies from both regional and international partners regarding the suspicious vessel. This crucial information was promptly relayed to the Kenya Navy, marking the beginning of a meticulous tracking effort. The boat was kept under radar as it traversed the Indian Ocean, with security agencies monitoring its movements closely.
To ensure the successful interception, a multi-agency team was swiftly assembled. This team comprised personnel from the Kenya Navy, Kenya Coast Guard, and NACADA. Together, they launched a well-coordinated sting operation in the Indian Ocean. As a result, the "Mash Allah" was intercepted and subsequently escorted to the port of Mombasa.
Deputy Commander of the Kenya Navy, Brigadier Sankale Kiswaa, elaborated on the precision of the operation, stating, “Kenya Navy was able to intercept this suspicious vessel about 630 km east of Mombasa and we have been able to conduct this operation seamlessly and we were able to arrest it and escort it to the port of Mombasa.”
Upon its arrival at the port, police obtained a court warrant to conduct a thorough search of the vessel. Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohammed Amin revealed the findings of the search: officers recovered 769 packages containing a crystalline substance. Subsequent tests confirmed this substance to be methamphetamine, with a total weight of 1,024 kilograms.
Following the bust, the six individuals found on board the vessel were arrested. These crew members, all Iranian nationals, were identified as Jasem Darzadeh, Nadeem Jadgal, Imran Baloch, Hassan Baloch, Rahim Bakshi, and Imtiaz Daryayi. They are currently assisting with ongoing investigations.
Detectives from the DCI are rigorously working to establish the exact origin and intended destination of this massive drug haul. Given that the vessel was confirmed as stateless, investigations are also focused on unmasking the drug barons and other operatives involved in the narcotics trade, both within the East African region and internationally. The DCI boss indicated his belief that the consignment was destined for smuggling into East Africa for distribution, though specific destinations remain under investigation.
This major seizure underscores Kenya's unwavering commitment to combating narcotics trade and drug trafficking. Kenyan authorities have intensified their efforts in this war, leading to numerous arrests and significant busts in the recent past, demonstrating a relentless pursuit of those involved in illegal drug activities.
