Keith Hackett: Dom Hyam faces retrospective action after Blackburn vs Norwich incident

Published 4 weeks ago2 minute read
last month, this game represented the start of a new era for the club.

Valerien Ismael took charge of his first game as the Ewood Park outfit’s new manager on Saturday (1 March) playing out a 1-1 draw with the Canaries.

That came after the likes of Gary O’Neil, Steven Gerrard and Richie Wellens had all bee linked with the role at Blackburn.

That draw came following a dramatic end to the game, with substitute Emmanuel Dennis being sent off for the hosts with just five minutes of normal time remaining.

Ante Crnac then thought he had scored a winner for Norwich in the 90th minute, only for Andi Weimann to head in an equaliser deep into stoppage time to deny Johannes Hoff Thorup’s side.

Prior to all that though, Blackburn may have been fortunate not to have seen another player sent off following an incident between Hyam and Gunn.

After the visiting goalkeeper had caught a cross from a set-pieve inside his own penalty area, it looked as though he was all set to attempt to launch a quick counter attack.

Hyam though cut across his path, before the Blackburn centre-back threw out an arm that caught Gunn in the face, sending him to the ground.

Referee Doughty did not take any action over that incident, and Hackett believes that Hyam was extremely fortunate to escape punishment, but could be caught at a later stage.

After being asked by whether retrospective action could be taken against the Blackburn man, the former referee said:

“If ever there was a requirement to re-referee this incident is it. A clear arm in the face of the goalkeeper. A red card offence and it should have been seen by the referee.”

Following that draw, both Blackburn and Norwich remain in the hunt for a place in the Championship play-offs this season.
