Kasarani Roars for Harambee Stars: Fans Surge for Crucial Madagascar Clash
)
Kenya is gearing up to face Madagascar in the quarterfinals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, with high optimism that Kasarani Stadium will see significant fan presence despite previous sanctions from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The lead-up to the crucial Friday clash has been marked by a blend of ticketing challenges, stadium capacity restrictions, and overwhelming fan demand, all pointing to strong support for the Harambee Stars.
Salim Mvurya, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, has expressed strong confidence in the preparations for the match. Accompanied by Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi and Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chair Nicholas Musonye, Mvurya commended the LOC’s efforts to ensure the match meets the required standards, emphasizing its importance for both sporting success and Kenya’s continental profile. His statements underline the government's commitment to a successful event.
To accommodate the immense interest, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the LOC have expanded the number of official fan zones from 10 to 13 across Nairobi and Mombasa. This strategic move aims to provide safe and organized viewing spaces for fans unable to secure tickets for Kasarani, allowing more Kenyans to participate in this historic moment and rally behind the Harambee Stars. The expansion reflects a broader government effort to harness the unity and enthusiasm generated by CHAN 2024, which has fostered a rare sense of shared purpose nationwide.
A significant concern preceding the match was the stadium’s restricted capacity. Initially, CAF permitted Kasarani’s full 44,000 seats to be utilized for group matches. However, following a series of incidents during the group stage, attendance was capped at 27,000 for Kenya’s final group game against Zambia, representing a 60% capacity. The FKF, supported by the LOC, formally appealed to CAF for an increase. Their appeal detailed corrective measures, including stricter security protocols, improved crowd flow systems, and enhanced gate operations.
Kenyans can now breathe a sigh of relief as CAF has cleared 80% stadium capacity for the quarterfinal match, allowing up to 38,400 supporters into Kasarani. This decision by CAF comes after the successful appeal, reversing the earlier 60% restriction. This increase in capacity aims to ensure that as many Kenyans as possible can witness the game live.
The demand for tickets has been extraordinary, with the official ticketing platform, Mookh Africa, experiencing server downtime due to the sheer volume of fans attempting to secure their spots. This ticketing frenzy is widely seen as a positive indicator, signifying a rekindled nationwide passion for football after years of fluctuating attendance and enthusiasm, largely fueled by the Stars' strong performance in CHAN 2024.
Beyond the quarterfinal match, CS Mvurya highlighted the broader impact of CHAN 2024 on Kenya's continental image. He noted that Kenya's successful hosting of the tournament and the Harambee Stars' impressive showing have progressively profiled the country on the continental stage and showcased its immense talent. Mvurya urged Kenyans to maintain the current spirit of unity and purpose, steering clear of divisive politics, as they unite in support of their national team.
The Harambee Stars enter the quarterfinals with considerable momentum, having topped Group A after playing all their matches at the familiar Kasarani Stadium. Their unbeaten run, with three wins and one draw in four group games, has been significantly bolstered by overwhelming home support. However, Madagascar, which topped a challenging group including Morocco and DR Congo, is expected to provide a stern test.
Head coach Benni McCarthy has urged his squad to approach this massive occasion with composure. Recognizing that none of his players have reached this stage in a continental tournament before, McCarthy emphasized the importance of staying calm and not allowing the weight of the moment to overwhelm them. This marks Kenya’s first appearance in the knockout stage of a continental tournament in 38 years, adding to the significance of the match.
Motorists planning to use the Thika Superhighway on Friday, August 22, will face traffic disruptions as police implement roadblocks at Muthaiga and Ruiru Interchange. The National Police Service has advised motorists from the city center heading to Thika Road to use Kiambu Road at Exit 4. Similarly, those traveling from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru towards Nairobi should opt for the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road. Vehicles without access passes to Kasarani will be diverted to service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8, with police urging compliance to avoid stern action against those flouting traffic rules. Other quarterfinal matches include Tanzania vs. Morocco and Uganda vs. Senegal on Friday, and Sudan vs. Algeria on Saturday. The CHAN 2024 semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday, with the final set for Saturday next week, following the third-place playoff.
