Kano University Lecturers Demand Removal of Governing Council Chair and Oppose New VC

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education Kano (YUMSFUEK) branch, has demanded the immediate removal of Professor Ahmad Adamu from his position as Chairman of the institution's Governing Council. Professor Adamu, who also serves as the Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, is accused by the lecturers of a significant conflict of interest. ASUU alleges that his dual role has undermined YUMSFUEK's transition and violated principles of transparency and due process.

In a petition jointly signed by Dr. Bashir Ibrahim, the branch chairman, and five other members, addressed to the Minister of Education, Dr. Yusuf Maruf Tunji Alausa, the union also vehemently rejected an alleged ongoing plan by the Council to appoint a new Vice Chancellor without adhering to due process. Furthermore, they opposed the proposed reappointment of the outgoing Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sadi Mohammed Sirajo, as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor.

ASUU has accused the Governing Council of flouting the Federal Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act by deliberately excluding key statutory members, including representatives of the Senate, Congregation, and Convocation, from the Vice Chancellor selection process. The union asserted that “The entire process was a charade orchestrated by a compromised Governing Council that deliberately excluded critical stakeholders, violated statutory provisions, and acted in bad faith to impose a predetermined candidate.” They contend that without these mandatory representatives, the Governing Council is illegally constituted, rendering all decisions, including the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor, null and void.

Strong objections were also raised against Professor Adamu's continued leadership as Council Chairman, with ASUU accusing him of bias, incompetence, and fostering division within the university. The union stated, “His dual role constitutes a glaring conflict of interest, as his primary loyalty remains with ABU, not YUMSFUEK.” They further alleged that under his leadership, the Council has operated with secrecy, sidelined dissenting voices, and facilitated the imposition of his favored candidate, calling for his immediate removal to ensure the institution's stability and progress.

Regarding Dr. Sirajo, whose tenure as Acting VC expired four months ago, ASUU accused him of overstaying his mandate, obstructing the university’s upgrade, and leveraging his influence within the Council to suppress dissent and maintain power through proxies. The union claimed, “He misled the Council, withheld crucial documents, and victimized staff who opposed his extended stay,” specifically citing denials of promotions, allowances, and training opportunities for such staff.

ASUU issued a stark warning that failure to address these demands could plunge the university into a deeper crisis, urging the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other relevant bodies to intervene urgently to safeguard the institution. As of the time the report was filed, the Governing Council and university authorities had not officially responded to the serious allegations.
