Gennaro Gattuso Appointed New Head Coach of Italy National Football Team

Gennaro Gattuso has officially been named as Italy’s new national team coach, taking over from Luciano Spalletti. The 47-year-old former midfielder will now face the crucial task of guiding the Azzurri to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following Italy's recent struggles in reaching football's premier tournament.
Gattuso brings a wealth of experience from his illustrious playing career. A celebrated member of Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning squad, he earned 73 caps for the national team. His club career was particularly marked by his 13-year spell with AC Milan, where he became a legend, winning the Serie A title and the UEFA Champions League twice. He also had a notable period with Rangers.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has expressed strong confidence in Gattuso. FIGC President Gabriele Gravina stated, “Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football. The blue shirt is like a second skin for him. His motivation, his professionalism and his experience will be essential to best face the upcoming commitments of the national team.”
Gattuso's appointment comes at a pivotal time for Italian football. While the national team secured victory in Euro 2020, they have conspicuously failed to qualify for the last two World Cups, including the most recent tournament. Luciano Spalletti's departure was hastened by a 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Norway on June 6, which ultimately sealed his fate.
Since retiring from playing in 2013, Gattuso has transitioned into management, with Italy marking the tenth team he has managed in just 12 years. His managerial journey has seen him coach various clubs, with his longest tenure being two seasons at Pisa, then a third-tier Italian side, where he experienced his most significant success.
Gennaro Gattuso is scheduled to be formally presented to the media by the Italian Football Federation on Thursday, where he will outline his vision for the national team's future.
