Kano varsity lecturers demand ABU VC's removal, reject new appointment

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano (YUMSFUEK) branch, has demanded the immediate removal of the Chairman, Governing Council of the institution, Professor Ahmad Adamu.

The university lecturers argued that the dual role of Professor Adamu, who currently serves as Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and Chairman of the YUMSFUEK Governing Council, constitutes a glaring conflict of interest and is stagnating the transition process of the Kano varsity.

Besides, ASUU rejected the alleged plan by the university’s council to appoint a new Vice Chancellor without due process and to subsequently reposition Dr. Sadi Mohammed Sirajo as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor.

ASUU made the demand in a petition jointly signed by its Chairman, Dr. Bashir Ibrahim, and five other members, addressed to the Minister of Education, Dr. Marauf Tunji Alausa, and made available to journalists on Sunday in Kano.

According to the petition, ASUU alleged that the Governing Council has violated statutory provisions of the University Act and is acting in bad faith to impose a predetermined candidate as VC after the expiration of Dr. Sadi Mohammed Sirajo’s tenure four months ago.

“The entire process was a charade orchestrated by a compromised Governing Council that deliberately excluded critical stakeholders, violated statutory provisions, and acted in bad faith to impose a predetermined candidate.

“First, the council is incomplete and illegitimate, as it deliberately excluded statutory members representing the University Senate, Congregation, and Convocation—a gross violation of the Federal Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act (as amended). This Act mandates that the Council must include representatives from these critical bodies to ensure fairness, transparency, and stakeholder inclusion in university governance.

“The deliberate refusal to appoint these representatives exposes a sinister agenda to truncate the upgrading and transition of the institution to a university, manipulate the VC selection process, rendering all decisions taken by the Council null and void,” ASUU argued.

On the position of the ABU VC, the university lecturers submitted, “The Chairman of the Governing Council, who currently serves as the Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has demonstrated a clear lack of competence, foresight, and impartiality in governing YUMSFUEK’s affairs.

“His dual role constitutes a glaring conflict of interest, as his primary loyalty remains with ABU, not YUMSFUEK. Under his leadership, the Council has operated with secrecy, bias, and a complete disregard for due process.

“His lopsided administration has entrenched divisions, sidelined dissenting voices, and facilitated the imposition of his favoured candidate as VC. His continued chairmanship is a direct threat to the stability and progress of YUMSFUEK, and he must be relieved immediately.”

The petition accused the outgoing Acting VC, Dr. Sirajo, of exceeding his legal tenure, obstructing the university’s upgrade, misleading the Council, and suppressing progress. ASUU alleged that Dr. Sirajo is prepared to victimize some members and deny them rights and privileges for opposing his continued stay in office.

In their demands, ASUU wanted the reconstitution of the Council with consideration of all statutory members, including representatives of the Senate, Congregation, host community, and alumni.

They also urged the Federal Government to probe all the fraudulent processes in the university with appropriate sanctions for those involved, and to direct the restoration of all withheld promotions, allowances, and other entitlements.
