Kano State Announces School Closures for Eid-el-Kabir Holiday

The Kano State Government, through its Ministry of Education, has officially announced the Eid-el-Kabir holiday for all primary and post-primary schools across the state for the year 2025. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Makoda, in a statement issued by the Ministry's Director of Public Enlightenment, Mr. Balarabe Kiru.

According to the directive, the holiday is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, 4th June 2025. For students in boarding schools, the break will extend until Sunday, 15th June 2025, which is their resumption date. Day students are expected to resume classes on Monday, 16th June 2025.

Parents and guardians of boarding school students have been instructed to pick up their children or wards from their respective schools by the early hours of Wednesday, 4th June 2025. Commissioner Makoda also emphasized the importance of parents ensuring the timely return of their children to school immediately after the break concludes.

The Ministry of Education has reassured all stakeholders, including parents and school administrators, that all other aspects of the 2024/2025 school academic calendar will remain unchanged. This includes any previously stipulated public holidays, ensuring the directive aligns with the existing academic schedule.

In his statement, Commissioner Dr. Ali Makoda expressed gratitude to the parents, guardians, and the good people of Kano State for their continued support and cooperation with the Ministry. He extended his wishes to all students and pupils for a successful, peaceful, and joyful Sallah break.

The Eid-el-Kabir holiday allows families to observe the significant Islamic celebration, also known as Eid al-Adha. This festival commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, before God provided a ram as a substitute. Eid-el-Kabir is traditionally marked by special prayers, feasting, and the ritual sacrifice of livestock, such as sheep, cows, or camels. Portions of the sacrificed animal are typically shared among family, friends, and the less privileged, highlighting the festival's emphasis on charity, community spirit, and gratitude.

It was also noted in related reports that while the Kano school holiday is set around these dates, the actual observance of Eid Al Adha in 2025 could vary globally, potentially falling on June 6th or June 7th. Such variations often arise from differences in moon sighting practices and subsequent announcements by religious authorities in various countries. For instance, nations like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Australia, and Indonesia had confirmed their observance of Eid Al Adha on June 6th, based on traditional crescent moon sightings.
