Orji Kalu Alleges Political Backing for Boko Haram to Target Tinubu

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, has leveled serious allegations, claiming that influential members of Nigeria’s political elite are actively fueling the resurgence of Boko Haram. He asserted that these actions are part of a deliberate and politically motivated plot aimed at destabilizing the administration of President Bola Tinubu. Kalu made these assertions during an appearance on Channels Television's programme, 'Politics Today,' on a Monday.

According to Senator Kalu, the recent escalation in terrorist activities is not a random occurrence but a calculated move orchestrated by what he termed the "political class." He identified this group as a network comprising politicians, powerful businesspeople, and senior civil servants. Kalu emphasized that their primary motivation is not financial gain but the pursuit of power, stating, "Some of them aren’t after money—they’re after power. They want to tear down the system just to grab control."

Elaborating on the alleged strategy, Kalu explained that these individuals are leveraging insecurity and employing terrorism as a tool to fight President Tinubu, suggesting this was a tactic used against previous administrations as well. He described the growing insecurity in Nigeria as a "politically induced" crisis, where those disenchanted with the current governance are deliberately stoking chaos to gain political leverage and hijack political power.

In light of these grave accusations, Senator Kalu issued a call for unity and patriotism among Nigerians. He urged citizens to prioritize the national interest and the welfare of the ordinary Nigerian above selfish political ambitions and personal gain. "If we consider ourselves friends and patriots, we should care about the ordinary Nigerian. We must work together to build a better country," Kalu stated.

Kalu's comments surface amidst heightened concerns over renewed Boko Haram activity in Nigeria. Underscoring these concerns, a recent attack was reported where nine passengers were tragically killed in Mairari Village, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State. The fatalities occurred after Boko Haram insurgents detonated improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The security situation in Borno State has drawn strong reactions from local officials. Borno State House of Assembly Speaker, Abdulkarim Lawan, condemned the Mairari Village attack as "inhumane" and urgently called upon the military to intensify its efforts to reclaim the Guzamala area from the grip of insurgents. Similarly, Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, expressed profound concern over the resurgence of terrorist attacks within the state and advocated for swift, decisive action to address the escalating security threat.
