Ondo Assembly Deputy Speaker and Majority Leader Resign

The Ondo State House of Assembly experienced a significant leadership shakeup in early June 2025, as both the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Abayomi Akinruntan, and the Majority Leader, Mr. Oluwole Emmanuel Ogunmolasuyi, resigned from their positions. These resignations were announced during a plenary session of the House, presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Olamide Oladiji.

Mr. Akinruntan, who represents Ilaje Constituency 1 and is the son of the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan, had served as Deputy Speaker since his election in June 2023. Mr. Ogunmolasuyi represents Owo Constituency 1. Both lawmakers are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The primary reason cited for the resignations, particularly by Mr. Akinruntan, was the need to adhere to political power-sharing arrangements within Ondo State. His resignation letter, dated June 2nd, 2025, and read on the floor of the Assembly by the Clerk, Mr. Benjamin Jayeiola (Mr. Akinruntan being absent from the plenary), stated his departure was 'borne out of the need to align with the conventional arrangement in power sharing of elective positions in the state.' This move was reportedly to balance the political representation, as Mr. Akinruntan hails from the same Ilaje Local Council Area as the State Governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Similarly, the outgoing Majority Leader, Mr. Ogunmolasuyi, is from Owo Local Council, the same area as the Deputy Governor, Mr. Olayide Adelami.

Following Mr. Akinruntan's resignation, a new Deputy Speaker was promptly selected. Mr. Ololade Gbegudu, representing Okitipupa Constituency 2, was nominated for the position by Mr. Oluwatoyin Japheth of Akoko North East Constituency and seconded by Mr. Chris Ayebusiwa of Okitipupa Constituency 1. Mr. Gbegudu's nomination was uncontested, and he was subsequently sworn in, pledging to serve with due diligence.

In conjunction with the Deputy Speaker's replacement, Mr. Olatunji Oshati, representing Ose Constituency, was announced as the new Majority Leader of the Ondo State House of Assembly.

Further appointments to principal officer positions were also made during this period of restructuring. Mr. Muritala Sulaiman, representing Akoko South East, was announced as the new Chief Whip, and Mr. Fabiyi Olatunji, from Odigbo Constituency 1, was named the new Whip of the Assembly.

The Speaker, Mr. Olamide Oladiji, commented on the transitions, commending both former Deputy Speaker Akinruntan and former Majority Leader Ogunmolasuyi for their maturity and contributions. He praised Mr. Akinruntan as a 'peaceful ally' who supported the house and lauded Mr. Ogunmolasuyi for being a 'stabilizer' and a 'dependable ally.' These leadership changes were understood to be crucial for maintaining the unwritten elective political arrangements and ensuring equilibrium within the state's political landscape.
