Kano Police Nab Suspect in Vicious Mother Assault, Recover Illicit Firearm

The Kano State Police Command has announced the arrest of a 25-year-old man, Ididiong James, on charges of assaulting his mother and being in unlawful possession of an English Beretta pistol, along with eight rounds of live ammunition. This significant development was disclosed to the public on Wednesday in Kano through a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.
According to the official statement, the incident unfolded on January 25, 2026, at approximately 7:30 p.m. Officers from the Panshekara Division received a distress call and promptly responded, arriving at the residence in Panshekara Quarters. Upon their arrival, they discovered Ididiong James actively assaulting his mother. The suspect, however, managed to flee the scene as the police approached.
In a courageous act, the victim, James's mother, immediately handed over the Beretta pistol and the eight rounds of ammunition to the police. She explained that she had discovered the firearm and ammunition in her son's bag and had refused to return them to him. She also conveyed her observation that her son's behavior had undergone a noticeable change since his return from a recent New Year celebration, raising her concerns.
Following the initial response, Ididiong James was subsequently apprehended and is currently being held in police custody as investigations proceed. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, publicly lauded the mother for her exceptional bravery and fortitude in confronting her son's violent conduct and reporting the illicit possession of a firearm. He emphasized the importance of parental vigilance, advising parents to diligently monitor their children's activities.
CP Bakori stated, “The actions of this mother are commendable, and we appreciate her bravery in standing up against her son’s violent behavior. We also caution parents to monitor their children’s activities and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities.”
The Kano State Police Command reiterated its commitment to public safety and urged all residents to maintain vigilance and promptly report any suspicious activities to their nearest police station or utilize the provided emergency contact numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, or 09029292926.
