The driver of a truck, who was reportedly fleeing from police, collided with a motorcycle carrying three people, including the rider and two passengers

The three sustained serious injuries, while the driver died at the scene. The injured were taken to Kakamega County Referral Hospital for treatment.

According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle was travelling from Kakamega toward Kisumu and was reportedly carrying a substance suspected to be ethanol.

“The vehicle swerved unpredictably while being chased at high speed by the police and came close to hitting bystanders,” a witness told K24.

Witnesses reported that the vehicle’s tyres caught fire, causing the driver to lose control and collide with a motorcycle carrying three people.

The truck then veered off the road, overturned several times, and landed in a ditch.

The crash caused the truck to burst into flames, resulting in the immediate death of the driver. Residents urged police to adopt alternative methods when pursuing motorists suspected of wrongdoing.

“If the police determine a motorist is at fault, they should find safer ways to apprehend the suspect. Chasing suspects at high speeds on busy roads puts many lives at risk," said another resident.

In a separate incident, a devastating road accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway resulted in the deaths of two people and left several others injured.

The crash took place in the Malili area when a 16-seater public service vehicle, commonly known as a matatu, collided from behind with a trailer while both were heading toward Mombasa, said Buxton Mayabi, deputy county commissioner for Mukaa.

Mayabi confirmed that two passengers died instantly at the scene, while several others sustained injuries of varying severity.

The injured were immediately transported to Mukaa sub-county hospital for medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to a local mortuary, where they awaited identification and postmortem examinations.

In response to the tragedy, Mayabi called on all drivers to exercise heightened caution and adhere strictly to road safety regulations to prevent similar accidents in the future.

This incident comes just days after another fatal crash claimed the lives of 12 people along the Njoro-Molo Road.

On May 8, a Nakuru K Service matatu collided head-on with a lorry near the Chebonde/Arimi area, killing all 12 passengers on board, including six men and six women.

Michael Mwaura, the county police commander, confirmed the grim details of that accident, highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures across the region.
